Prophetstown, IL(Zone 5a)

GASP! This thread just keeps getting better....wow. Here's a shot of Regale (? I think) in its second year

Wow, lovely setting! :)

It's so nice to see what these selections really look like, as opposed to catalog touch-ups.

The jury';s still out on the Black walnut issue. Some ardent folks on both sides.

Regarding lilies and shade, as a general rule, downfacing, non-trumpet lilies (and to a lesser extent, outfacing) will have more parentage of shade tolerant ancestry. They asthetics is much better in the shade too: upfacing lilies always look (to me) like they are stretching for sun, with their necks as high as they can go. In my opinion, rather unsettling in an otherwise peaceful environment.

Jersey,
Thanks for the encouragement with your Regale pic. Mine is first year out and unimpressive; now I know what I have to look forward to. Many of my first year ones are puny. (There is hope)

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Gasp is right. I covet so many of these lilies but love the garden shots most of all. It's so nice to see where they live.

This lily was supposed to be a Backhouse martagon from Old House Gardens. It doesn't quite match anything else in their catalog and I have no clue what it is. It's upfacing and growing in shade now, so I don't know how well it'll do here whatever it is. In any case it's my first noid!

Congratulations wicker on your first NOID (applause, applause). It's a beauty!

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

wicker, its very pretty . . . a keeper.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

wickerparker, that is a soft, lovely one you've got there. If there is only one bloom, often Oriental lilies will face up when thats the case, but will achieve their normal placement when they develop a mature stem with multiple blooms. One of my 5 Backhouse martagons from Brent&Becky's was a no id. Did you only purchase 1 bulb, or was that just the only noid in the group?

Catherine, thats so beautiful how the lilies towers over everything else, looking down on the rest of the garden. That looks very rich in color for a Regale, could it be Pink Perfection?

That reminds me, I have an orangy trumpet, African Queen if I recall correctly, that bloomed well last year and looked like it was going to be amazing this year. It reached a good 6-7' and had tons of buds, which all turned brown and fell off when the biggest ones were about 1 1/2" long. Still has a massive stalk with lots of healthy looking leaves, but I'm wondering what would cause that.

Other lilies in the bed with them have been fine, actually seem extra happy. These 'Starfighter' are in that bed.

Thanks everyone. I would love to try martagons for shade (and *hopefully* black walnut beds too) although my rodent/rabbit problem is severe.

Neal - y'know I thought it looked like Pink Perfection too but it was labeled Regale when I bought it at a farmer's market. Think I'll keep it though *smile* Here's *close-up* - looks perfectly Pink to me, lol

Jersey, What an idyllic garden, makes me just want to stay awhile and be refreshed.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Catherine, what a pretty scene you have there. Love the way the lilies tower so gracefully.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Wow, so many beautiful lilies it is impossible for me to keep up and comment on all of the ones I love. You all give me so many ideas for what I'd like to try and keep me spending money, however, LOL. I do have a tiger lily blooming that I got at the Roundup though like Lily Love almost done here. I did plant my end-of-season Asiatics I bought from Brent and Becky so will be lucky to have a second flush of Asiatics blooming hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

BTW that "Schellenbaum" is spectacular!

Here is the Tiger lily...

Lefty, if the Martagons weren't so expensive I'd plant them under the BW's in a heartbeat. I have Asiatics, Orientals, Trumpets and others in there, but since Martagons can be pouty on top of being expensive, I tend to worrry, ya know. :)

just ran across this picture of a fasciated lily with 50 flowers on one stem and had to share it. http://www.oldhousegardens.com/regalCate.asp

very cool Moby..loved it!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

gemini_sage -- I got 10 Backhouses from them this year and also 5 White Henryi's. That one sure isn't either one of those. Don't remember any one bulb looking out of place. Happy to have an orphan though. (Thanks Magnolialover!)

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Gemini, how tall is your Gluhwein??

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

So many cool ones! Here's good old White Henryi, still one of my favorites.

I divided American Dream this Spring and it is only about half as tall as normal.

This was bought as Golden Stardust. Not so sure it is, but I like it. One of my largest.

'Golden Stardust' reminds me a lot of 'Conca d' Or'. Very nice.

'African Queen' is always pristine.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I think my Golden Stardust may be Conca d'Or too. The only photo of GS I could not find does not really match mine.

I think this is Ortega.

Very pretty.

So if you divide them in the Spring they don't do as well compared to doing it in the Fall?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I'm not sure. It's the first time I've ever divided this one. I have a few more I will have to try dividing this fall and see how they do next year.

I started Pt. 6 here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/875745/

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

revclaus, I just planted Gluhwein this spring, so its under 3' tall.

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Thanks, gemini. I'm going to plant it. I treat them as annuals since they get planted in pots. If I LOVE it, I'll winter it over. Did that last year with White Stargazer which is now ready to bloom for its second year.
