I phoned in an order for a birdbath with them in spring 2005 and the person on the phone was very friendly and helpful. I got my order quickly and the birdbath was as beatiful as described. I also think it is unfair for someone to give them a negative rating on account of them not having a particular thing. I buy from several different companies each year, local and elsewhere, because not a single one of them has EVERYTHING I am looking for.

I placed an order for Christmas yesterday due to their free shipping for orders placed this weekend.

Later on I realized I had forgotten to buy for Harry, our rescue Lhasa. I filled out the form and saw there was a shipping charge for orders under $75.00. I emailed the company, they replied promptly and asked me to send them the data on what I wanted to order. I did, they added it to my order and there will be no shipping charges.

The negative comment above, on the fact that they didn't have a specific tool, was absurd. How could one company be expected to have every possible tool in every size, etc.

I tried to order a Garden screen/sieve here but couldnt find one in their catalog. I live in Vermont and prefer to patronize local businesses.

I finally found a sifter/sieve from a garden supply in Washington State and was slightly annoyed that it had to travel the entire country to get to my garden in Vermont.

The sieve is a life saver here in Vermont. My "soil" if it can be called that is extremely rocky in addition to the fill that was used when my home was constructed in 1989 which is mostly sand and stone and gravel.

Sieving not only helps my new plantings, its also provides me a never ending harvest of gravel for ongoing paving projects.

You always get a receipt and shipping confirmation on your order. Packaging is careful and shipping is quick. Emails are answered within a day or two. As far as their products, I really like their self-watering container mix combined with small-cut coconut husk chips for indoor citrus - great drainage. Their transplant insurance and root shield have helped revive my ailing transplanted plants.

Gardener's Supply saved my sanity!

A few months ago, I bought a bag of potting soil that was, unbeknownst to me, infested with fungus gnat larvae. I repotted all my houseplants with this mixture, and within a week, had swarms of fungus gnats in my house. I tried everything to get rid of them, and nothing worked. Finally, when I was browsing on Gardener's website, I saw a product that contained beneficial nematodes that claimed to kill fungus gnats almost immediately, and would offer continuous protection.

I thought, as I swatted fungus gnats away from my monitor, why not try this?

So, I placed my order with Gardener's. Their website is very well designed, and the order process was seamlessly put together. The next business day, I received a call from them letting me know that I had entered an incorrect credit card number, and when I called back to correct it, I found their customer service rep to be very friendly and laid back.

A week later I received my little nematodes. Two days after I applied them to the soil, I HAVE NO MORE FUNGUS GNATS!!!

I will definitely be ordering from Gardener's again, it really was one of the best gardening transactions I've had in a long time.

I order in volume, so that I need to get a few replacements is not a surprise, it's a small percentage. I can't think of any product I've ordered from Gardener's Supply that's been a total dud, a few things have been okay, most have been great. Favorites are the light garden, APS seed-starter kits and the terraza planters (tricky to assemble, but buy enough and you get the swing of it)

I've been a strong positive about this company for a long time. They do *SEEM* to bend over backward to solve problems, but I am getting tired of the same repeated shipping problems. I have complained to them in the past about poor shipping and they are so apologetic and considerate (as they are with other minor problems I may have experienced in the past), that I let it go. Well, I just opened a shipment and I am so irritated, I should probably cool off before I hit submit, but I think Watchdog is the only way to go. Maybe this time they will change their practices instead of just sweetly apologizing and sending me a new whatever.

I ordered some Compost Plus in small 5 lb bags and they are so poorly packaged the bag popped because they put heavy things squished up next to it unsecured. The HUGE box and all my other things in it are now covered with dirt. I ordered tub trugs and they are squished together and possibly deformed. Some warm weather will probably help that problem.

I havent even opened the 2nd box. I don't even want to look.

I wouldn't give this entire shipment too much thought if it had not happened TWICE or THRICE before with the SAME ITEM (or greensand) where they apologized and came up with some excuse or false promise.

On March 23rd, 2005, nevadagdn added the following:

A couple of notes on the Terraza planters: 1) have a hammer (any kind of hammer will do) handy when assembling. Otherwise you end up using your fist to bang the planters together and it HURTS. 2) Pay close attention to the assembly instructions. The Terraza planters, while not nightmarishly difficult, are not extremely simple to assemble. Now that I have my three planters assembled, I'm more than happy with them.
On June 1st, 2005, nevadagdn added the following:

Subsequent orders have been equally satisfactory. My most recent purchase: the tall hedge hydrant, which was dead easy to install except for the part where I had to crawl under the rosebush to hook up the hose to the original faucet (not their fault).

I ordered a pair of grass shears from this company. When they arrived they were simply not operable. Although they hadn't been cheap in price, they were certainly below par in quality. I sent e-mail to gardener's supply asking them what to do.

They told me to ship the shears back at my own expense. I wrote to them again and asked for a postage-paid label. They responded that they would be happy to refund my shipping costs if I sent the shears back via parcel post or UPS ground. I sent them UPS ground, which cost over $17.00.

Days went by and I heard nothing from them, although according to the tracking the package had arrived. Finally a credit appeared on my card, but only for the amount of the shears plus a few dollars. I wrote to them again, asking if they needed any further information from me to refund my return shipping costs. I offered to send the shipping receipt, etc. They said they didn't need any of that, and that my money would be refunded.

The last I heard, they said they had refunded my shipping charges, although the amount has not shown up on my card. I will wait a few days and start chasing them down again. All in all I've sent over 10 e-mails in regard to this return, and I've had less than helpful responses from these people. I will certainly not order from them again.

I've found their gardening supplies to be a little expensive compared to some other companies, but they often have nice sales and discounts. I usually wait for a sale to buy, but everything has been of good quality and worked as advertised.

Their customer service is superb. I once bought a rain barrel that arrived with a mysterious second tube of beaten-up plastic around the outflow, which prevented me from attaching a hose. They worked with me until we figured out that the second layer of plastic wasn't something that had been partially torn off, as I thought, but some extra plastic that had been left on after molding. They suggested I try to cut it off - if that didn't succeed or I accidentally cut the barrel, they'd send me another one. (The operation was successful and I didn't have to ask for a replacement.) Very nice, patient people.

Their store is also worth a visit, but quite a temptation to the credit card!

On July 27th, 2007, AS changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following:

I'm changing my rating to neutral due to a recent experience with an order, and also their high prices compared to other companies.
For instance, the DynaZap mosquito/ bug attractor is at least $30 more than I would have paid at Planet Natural, which I discovered later. Now, that's my own fault for for not shopping around more before I ordered.

On the other hand, the way they mismanaged a recent order isn't. I ordered several things June 19. Most of it arrived within a week, but one item was marked 'separate ship'. It never arrived, so I called them on July 3. The person I spoke to said it was being packed "right now." That phrase should have been a red flag. It still wasn't here by July 19 or 20, so I checked online. The item had actually been shipped June 29 (don't ask me why the customer service person didn't know that on July 3 and couldn't track it then.) I looked it up on FedEx and it had been apparently sent to the wrong address and returned to the manufacturer/shipper. So I called again. The person I spoke with knew nothing about it, but after she checked, she was apologetic, and said they'd re-ship it. She wasn't sure they if could offer expedited shipping since "the person who deals with that isn't at his desk." (I didn't ask for expedited shipping, but after she mentioned it I did think "yes, that's probably the least you could do.") Well, I just checked online again and it was shipped out July 25, 5-6 days after I called - using UPS Ground. It's due to arrive here July 31, if they can get it right this time. I'm not impressed. The worst of it is that this is a shade sail we could have used for most of the summer, and now we're getting it when it's practically time for summer items to go on sale.

So while I would say they're an OK company overall, personally I'm feeling fairly lukewarm about their recent customer service. Between that and the high prices, I'll probably consider other companies first.

On July 3rd, 2008, AS added the following:

Still neutral. I ordered some of their Christmas items on sale last year. The quality just wasn't as good as previous years (it used to be excellent), and I don't think I'll bother again. Since I got them all at a deep discount after the holidays, I decided to keep most of them. Though I didn't give them as gifts, as I'd planned - some just looked embarrassingly cheap. I did contact customer service about one item, a "hand made" leaded glass suncatcher that arrived broken (as in shoddy workmanship, with two of the glass pieces separated by at least half an inch of air and the solder covering the edge of only one of the separated pieces. Obviously a manufacturing problem, and not broken during shipment,) They were very good about refunding what I'd paid for it (they would have also replaced it, but after I saw it was made in China, I didn't trust leaded glass), and sensibly didn't ask me to send a broken piece of glass back through the mail. On the other hand, I also noticed that the suncatcher seemed small for the spot I'd wanted it (despite fitting perfectly into the styrofoam packaging), so before I threw it out, I measured it - the diameter was a couple of inches smaller than the specifications on the webpage. Now THAT someone at Gardener's Supply should have noticed.
On April 4th, 2009, AS added the following:

Continued neutral. Ordered non-holiday gardening gifts from the regular catalog - a bird feeder and an ornament - they were quite nice, and got to the recipient well-packed and in plenty of time for Christmas. But their spam is really, truly ridiculous. I've ordered by mail lately, to avoid giving them my email address. But I must have been fool enough to give it to them in the past, because I started getting marketing spam again, soon after that order - several messages a week. After a while, I also started getting spam from from their affiliate Dutch Gardens. I tried unsubscribing through book links. It told me that my preference had been changed.... and the spam kept coming without pause. I've shunted their messages to my spam folder and reported them to Yahoo as spam, so it doesn't bother me much. But maybe they should rethink their policy and send email ads only to those who explicitly agree to it.
On April 4th, 2009, AS added the following:

Sorry, typo. "...tried unsubscribing through BOTH links."
