I will never deal with this company again. I ordered 1 shrub, 1 tree, a pastel lily collection, Plox, and Dutchman's Breeches. Dutchman's Breeches did not grow at all. The Phlox and lilies turned out completely different from the catalog's description and pictures. Now I won't know what the shrub and tree will be until maybe a few years from now. Don't trust them any more.

I have ordered from Jung in the past. I have always had good orders from them.

I realize they are having some trouble this year, but the items that I ordered arrived in fairly good shape. My items did arrive later than last year, but still in plenty of time for planting. One bare root item was rotten when I received it, so I emailed them. They never returned my email, but I received a replacement item in about two weeks which looked much better.

It did take three shipments to receive all of the items, but I found that nice because it gave me time to plant things since I had a rather large order.

I ordered a set of three birch trees and was very surprised when they arrived and were four feet tall each. The roses that I ordered were very nice plants.

On August 12th, 2003, JulieU changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following:

I ordered the collection of nine asiatic lily bulbs. Only 4 bulbs were the correct color, the other 5 were completely wrong. One of them was Latvia, which I ordered last year only as a single order (not as a collection) so I received three bulbs. Only one of them was the correct color. I emailed them and they refunded my money for the two bulbs. They wanted to know which color I had received instead, so I emailed them. This year I received the same color that was in error last year. Apparently they have not fixed this problem. I will email them and I assume they will refund my money like last year. I would really have liked to recieve the correct colors.
On July 2nd, 2004, JulieU added the following:

Most of the trees I ordered this spring were wonderful. When I got them they were just beginning to leaf out, so they set out well and I knew they would grow. They are doing wonderfully.

However one tree, a Russian Olive, arrived in really rough shape. It was about two feet tall, but the bark was dry and peeling off. There is no way it got that bad just in the time it took for shipping. I live in the same state. I'm surprised they would even bother sending a tree that looked that bad. I emailed customer service and they said give it a chance. It had since started growing, but as a tiny little shoot out of the base of the tree. Not exactly what I ordered.

Then I also ordered a dwarf honeycrisp. This is a grafted tree. I did not like the looks of the graft. It made a ninety degree angle out from the tree. Customer service again told me to give it a chance, it will eventually grow out of this. I compared it to trees in local garden centers and they were no where near like this. The tree is growing really well but it is going to take a few years for it to start looking nice. This is my first grafted tree so I'm not for sure, but what if this makes the tree weaker there. Trees are a long-term investment and I don't want it to get bad five years from now and have to replace it. I was a little disappointed. If it was me I would only want to send stuff out that I would want in my own personal garden.

It is disappointing that that these two things would have to tarnish what would have been a really nice order otherwise.

I also had a little trouble with their email. I sent them an email on June 1. My email account said that it was successfully sent and I even have a copy in my sent folder, but they say they never received it. Finally when there was no response I sent another. They replied saying they never received the first one. I tried to send a response and it would not go through. I have sent numerous emails from that account and have not had a problem with any other email. Just letting people know that their email may not be the most reliable.

On a good note, they were very nice to replace two items that did not overwinter for me. They would not have had to have done this.

We ordered from Jung for over a decade and while our experiences with them were always good, our experiences with them the past few years have been poor. We ordered quite a few perennials from them last fall. About half arrived dead. I called Jung and asked for replacements. I was told to plant them anyway and to wait until this spring for replacements. They didn't come up. I called. The replacement plants were dead and consisted of nothing except a few tiny roots in a plastic bag. A neighbor had a similar experience. We're not ordering from Jung anymore.

In the middle of April, I ordered four bareroot roses from Jung. I received an immediate email response that they had received my order. After four weeks and still no roses, I emailed Jung. Eight days later they emailed me back, saying that my roses were on "product hold and would be released for shipment soon". Hmmmm, what the heck is product hold??

I called them. I was on hold for 45 minutes. They said product hold means due to the anticipated weather in my area (zone 4)they were holding the order until it was warmer. It was in the 70's here when I called, and I'm about three hours from Jung. I asked the lady to please release my order and send it.

I just received them about a week ago (about two weeks after I called).

I will never order from Jung again, which is a shame because the plants are very nice.

Like many others, I did not have a good experience with Jung's this year. I have ordered from them for many years, with no particular problems. This year I placed an order on-line for seeds and plants, including 2 kinds of asparagus and 3 kinds of onion plants. The seeds came in good order, although in 2 different batches. On May 15th I received one of the onion varieties in a small box (I'm in the far north, so the timing on that was okay) and also in the box was the packing list for another box which should have had all the other plants. When I tried to call, almost impossible to get through; I finally did by just waiting with the speaker phone on while I worked on my computer. With the first call I was told they would "put a trace on it and get the plants to me ASAP." I probably should have just asked for a refund then, but figured if I could get the stuff within a week I'd still be okay. Eight days later (on June 5th), had not heard anything so called again; I was told the order was supposed to be shipped out "after June 3rd." When I requested a refund (to my credit card) the customer rep said she would do that, no problem, and apologized for the trouble and asked me to just call and let them know if the package ever somehow did show up. Just checked with the credit card company and the refund is there, in fact they refunded a couple of dollars more than I was charged. I'm undecided as to whether I'll order from them next year; if I do it will likely not be a large order, but I do hope they get their act back together as I've always found their prices reasonable and the products and service (in the past) at least as good as most other companies.

I ordered several items from Jung's this year (seeds, supplies, and live plants & trees). I was satisfied with everything except the trees. The plants looked good, seeds are fine. I was disappointed that the trees I ordered arrived with no wrapping or anything to protect the roots from drying out. Of the four trees I received weeks ago (2 shagbark hickory and 2 swamp white oak) only one of the oaks has put out leaves. The other three appear dead. I suspect that they died because the roots had gotten too dry, but I planted them the day I got them, so I'll lay the blame on Jung's. One other criticism: the planting instructions included with my trees recommended that the tree roots be soaked in water for many hours before planting, which I did. A few days later, I received an order of trees from a different company (Musser), and Musser recommended *against* soaking trees in water before planting, commenting that it washes away beneficial bacteria on the roots. Makes sense to me.

I have to agree, they have fallen down on the job. I have used Jung in the past, and this year, I placed three orders, approx $300.00 total. The first was seeds - it took 5 mailings, some at the last minute to get this filled.

Then, Hostas - all were delivered, very tiny (TC?) roots, but all but 1 are growing. One is a weird sport, not a rosette of leaves but a tall stalk with a rosette at the top and scapes with buds on the mid-stalk! (Francee).

The third, late order was for one clematis and sweet potato plants. The clematis came, with a limp, white sprout 4" long. Planted same day in improved spot. Has shown no gowth, but according to them I have to wait 45-60 days to complain!

I was charged for the sweet potato plants (4/19)a week before the Clematis was shipped, but have never received them. I have made three e-mail enquiries (can't get through on CS lines), with NO reply at all. On 5/22, a CS rep did answer, said order was sent to a conractor for fulfillment- I said why bill me, not supposeed to bill until shipped. She said they were having weather problems, but were due to ship 5/3-5/13. This was on 5/22! emailed again yesterday. no action. Cancelled charge through credit card co. Don't ever order from them unless you have this kind of hold so you don't get gypped. I do believe they are having problems.

HOWEVER, this year's been an absolute disaster. My order didn't come and I've spent WEEKS trying to get through on the customer service line. Always get either a busy signal or "hold." They're not answering their phones or their e-mails. I think they've gone out of business.

By error (probably mine) the expiration date didn't enter correctly, but it took Jung over two weeks to U.S. MAIL me a form letter asking for the correct information, although they had both a phone number and email address. I figured that by the time I sent the form letter back and my order was processed and mailed it would be too late in the season to bother with starting the seeds. I'm not ever placing another order--there are too many fine nurseries out there that treat customers with care.

Finally, this past weekend, I drove 30 miles to a local nursery, bought my strawberry plants there, and came home and got them planted. I emailed Jung again, this time telling them to cancel my order...and guess what? Within 2 hrs. I got an email back telling me that they had indeed cancelled my order...I will never buy from Jung again. Jungs Seeds is a very good example of why it is a bad idea for great small companies to expand too much, too fast. This is also the problem with corporate America today (and the same phenomenon which is now really hurting our economy). It seems like Jung's was a really good company-- and many of its new subsidiaries were good companies-- but now Jungs is unable to handle the volume and the entire situation. THE WAIT ON THE ORDER AND CUSTOMER SERVICE LINES IS UNACCEPTABLE. I have tried a dozen times to get through and have never managed to get through after 20 to 30 minute waits. They try to justify it by saying we're working hard, yada yada, well HIRE SOME MORE PEOPLE!
My story... in early or mid-March I sent an e-mail saying "hey what's up, I was going to order some roses from you -- a first time customer-- but I can't get through." To their credit, they called me the next day or soon thereafter and took my order of four rosebushes. The rosebushes were a bit slow. I had specifically said I needed FULLY DORMANT roses because of my climate -- if they were leafed out they would get knocked back. well my four bare root roses arrived and one was dead as a doornail... the other three had obviously been in transit for some time and had those little sprouts that look like they've never seen the light (and they were not small sprouts but two inches long- obviously they'd been there a while). Having no choice but to plant out, I did, and mulched well to try to protect/harden off the little shoots. But a 22-degree night bit them. So now I have one dead rose, and three unhappy roses, and I CANNOT GET THROUGH on the danged customer service line to get replacements. We'll see if they answer my e-mail, but it's a bit late for me. I'm turned off. I really like working with small nurseries who don't have this kind of volume -- where you get a human on the phone first ring.

Jung has been satisfactory in the past but fell down this year. I ordered 2 blueberries; 1 came thru potted and in good shape, 1 was bareroot and dried out, stuffed in a small plastic bag with a little peatmoss, most of which had fallen out. Seed potatoes were dried out, a few rotting, the rest slow to chit. Onion plants were slimy, and one variety (Walla Walla) is doing poorly in the garden. Yellowstone carrot seeds were not shipped. I e-mailed them on April 21 and have not received a reply as yet.

Granted, Jung's did replace those seeds when I called to inquire as to why they weren't even placed into a padded envelope -- however, the hold time for customer service was 25 minutes! I have vowed never to use Jung's again and instead intend to use Pinetree Garden Seeds for all of my future seed purchases. The catalog hadn't told how soon one must plant the lisianthus I ordered - once I got the seeds, I found it takes about 4 months to germinate, and this is way too long for the time I wanted to have them in bloom! By the middle of April, I still hadn't received my back order - another couple days of emailing, no reply; calling, put on hold; and I finally wrote them I wanted to cancel the back order. I read the comments from the Jung rep, and don't doubt that they are working hard. But when you acquire troubled businesses, you have to expect problems, and hire more staff! And if you're missing some seed, for heaven's sake, send the rest of the order and LET ME KNOW.

I buy most of my plants and seeds online, and have been almost universally pleased. Jung's performance is a big disappointment.

I'd put together a large plant order, but have not placed it since I have no idea when (or if) it will arrive. If the seeds ever show up, I plan to return them - it's too late now!

I ordered an oriental poppy collection and a few lily bulbs a week ago. The order arrived today, per my request. I placed the order by phone precisely so I could have the correct shipping for my real hardiness zone (as opposed the one assigned to my zip code by corporations). The roots all look a bit dry, but definitely viable, with little sprouts, and the lilies also look a bit dry but not rotten or diseased. I think all of my choices were fair value for the money: the bare-root oriental poppies (in seldom-available varieties) averaged $4.00 per plant, and the lily bulbs averaged $3.00 per bulb. I know I've got some nursing and coddling ahead of me, but at those prices, I expected that.

I'd also like to note, probably for about the hundredth time, that you get what you pay for in most instances. It pays to comparison shop, to check prices and selection at your local nurseries and on-line, to read reviews on a site such as this, and then do your buying.

Now that I've read some of the negative comments subsequent to mine, I suppose it did take a very long time for the customer service representative to answer the phone. I've been ordering from Jungs for several years, In my opinion they have superior stock to other mail order companies. I ordered 6 fruit trees over the years I feel they have large root systems and get to maturity quickly apples bearing in 2-3 years, cherries 4 years (trees where not feathered as you get from raintree but sprouted well). I've also ordered seeds, raspberries, daylilies, flower bulbs, and garden products. I would not put them at the same quality as Raintree but they are cheaper too. Will continue to order from them as they typically sell plants that grow well in my area (zone 5). Never really needed to return anything or call for failed items. Would highly recommend them.

I ordered a William Baffin climbing rose. It had a root system almost two feet long and once planted, has grown like crazy, even here in Minnesota: Zone 4a.
The plant was packaged well and I followed the directions per the package for pre-soaking in water and planting. I would definitely order roses from them again. I think their prices are reasonable being not too cheap and yet not too expensive. The catalog is straightforward without being pretentious, like White Flower Farm. ( I have had good luck with them too, but I paid a lot more for the products)

I have only ordered from Jung's once, but I don't expect to do business with them again. Lured by their low prices, the fact that they are relatively well-known, and that a friend had had a positive experience, I ordered a bunch of stuff - lilies, bare-root hostas, and some perennials. When my order arrived, it didn't look too promising - bulbs were small and shrunken-looking, bare roots dried out & very puny, one or two little plants obviously DOA. I planted them with high hopes anyway, and while most of them have hung on, none of them are what you'd call thriving. I didn't bother to complain to the company, figuring I had taken a risk in ordering from them in the first place, so I can't speak for their customer service department, but I won't order from them again. Cheap prices are no good if the plants are of poor quality - from now on, I'll stick with Bluestone & a few local growers.
