I've only ordered from Jung's once, a mix of seeds and a single shrub, so my experience with them isn't exactly far-reaching. I usually place orders with well-regarded Washington nurseries like Forest Farm and Heronswood, so my expectations tend to be high. I wasn't expecting the largest or well-packed of live plants from Jung's, but I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe it's because I live only a state away, but the shrub was sent at exactly the right time, arrived healthy & moist and was of generous size with good roots. The seeds were fine, too. I will use them again.

I have not ordered any products from Jung in approximately a year; however, I can say that from all the catalog nurseries from which I have purchased in the past, I would say that Jung is one of the best in plant quality and price comparisons. I have purchased from White Flower Farm in Connecticut, which has some of the highest prices in the nation, albeit a good product, and what I have purchased from them performs no better that what I have purchased from Jung in the past. I highly recommend their bare root roses, especially the old fashion forms.

I ordered from Jung for the first time this past spring. My bareroot plants arrived in mid-April, which is far too early to plant in southern Wisconsin. The plants looked healthy, but two of the five plants I ordered died. I contacted customer service and promptly received a credit that can be applied to a future order. (However, if I lose the credit letter, I'm out of luck. You can't use a copy of the letter and Jung will not attempt to make good on their guaranty a second time.) I also ordered a number of different seeds. The germination rate was very poor. Many varieties didn't germinate at all. The weather this spring was unusual (cold and wet at normal planting time), so I will try Jung's seeds once more. So far I haven't been impressed, but I'll reserve a negative rating until I see how successful my second order is.

I live in the Madison, Wisconsin area and visit the Jung stores often. I could not be happier with the many bareroot or seed items I have purchased. Everyone at the stores has been helpful, the Sun Prairie, Wisconsin store employees in particular have gone above and beyond to help answer questions or solve dilemmas I have come accross.

My relatives in other states purchase through Jung mailorder and also have nothing but praise for the company.

I would encourage anyone to order or shop from the Jung store or catalog!

I placed a very large order with Jung's in April. I must say that about two thirds of the plants were in very good condition. However, the other third was in bad shape and I attribute this, not to the original quality of the plants, but to the packaging. I imagine that if the order were fetched personally, I would have been quite pleased. However, I live in NY state and that is not possible. The packaging was sub-standard and so, the plants were subjected to unnecessary stress. I may try once more in fall after speaking with the people at Jung's. If the result is the same, I am going elsewhere.

I placed an order on 5/18/02 and received most of the same on 5/29/02. I ordered a Cinnamon Fern, Toad Lillies ane Liatris. The Liatris is on backorder and I have sent an e-mail requesting a ship date. All plants came in bare root form, and appear to be of good quality. I am located in a part of Missouri that has received quite a bit of rain and will not be able to plant my new purchases until the rain lets up (I don't think these companies check the weather forecast).

On June 10th, 2002, monarda changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following:

The Liatris was received on 6/08/02 in bulb form. They appear to be healthy. All other plants are doing well in my garden.

I called the customer service dept to find out when my order would be shipped, and because I wanted to order some further items. She had a shipping date for me very quickly, and informed me that the other items I wanted to order had been sold out... a half hour later, she called me back, told me they had gone through the inventory, and there were indeed a few left. I thought that was pretty courteous, as well as good customer service in the true sense.

I may give this company another chance, but so far their service is uneven. Spring plants were shipped very early, so it was impossible to get them in the ground quickly. Some looked very good, others not so hot. I have seen better merchandise, but I've seen worse, too.

I don't think the people at Jung's know the meaning of CUSTOMER SERVICE. I HAVE NEVER registered a public complaint in my life; however the treatment I received was atrocious. I wonder if the owners are unaware of this, or if they don't care. I ask to speak to a manager, I was told by this person that she was the manager and hung up on me, even a second try produced no results.

In 2001, I saw the highly invasive plant purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria, being sold at their retail store under a different common name. The formation of dense stands of purple loosestrife results in the loss of wetland habitat for the establishment and spread of native aquatic vegetation. It is my opinion that it's unethical to sell this plant as an ornamental, and downright WRONG to disguise the plant under a different name. I won't shop the store or the catalog for this reason.

Have ordered from Jung's for over 30 years. They used to be really excellent, but quality and size of plants has definitely slipped in the last few years. The Helleborus I received from them last year were absolutely TINY, MINISCULE, dormant tissue cultures for a hefty price. They are still ok for ordering standard seeds and plants, but it is best to avoid newly listed things as they will often be small with somewhat inaccurate descriptions. Customer service is good, but the president of the company didn't deem the letter I wrote him of merit to bother answering. Order with care.

I ordered some bare root apple trees from this company last spring and was very happy with the condition in which they arrived. I was not able to plant them right away as they suggest because I was putting them on some of my hunting property some distance away. When I last saw them last fall most of them were doing very well and the ones that died I attribute to my failure to get them in the ground within the first week. I will order from Jung again.

I have bought hundreds of $ of plants, -- bare root and potted, while living in Minn., Mi., Va. and Pa. They have been the best of all the mail order plant stores I've tried. When there was an occasional faulty plant, it was quickly replaced, or credit given for other options.

We have ordered from them for years and have been consistently impressed with the high quality -- much larger & tougher plants than from other nurseries that charge more. I had a very poor experience with Jung last year. The germination rate of fully 1/3 of the seeds was terrible. Worse than awful. I am a small commercial grower, and know when I have received bad seed. I wrote to them, and instead of replacing or refunding the seed, as other companies would do, they had me mail the remaining seed back for testing. I never heard back from them, although I called and left several messages for the lady I had been dealing with. I choose not to do business with a company that won't stand behind its product.

I'm a master gardener who has been gardening for about 15 years. It is my private opinion that you should only mail-order the plants that you cannot buy locally. Use the catalog plan if you want, but go to your local nursery and buy the bigger healthier version. Most mail order companies mail their plants in their dormant state and these will have to be tended constantly to survive. If it is a plant that you want that is not available locally, then the extra attention may be well worth it. I order allot of roses through the mail because I prefer the older varieties that many nurseries do not carry. (I have been very happy with Jung's roses) Also when ordering, be sure to check the description of plants when shipped. Some companies send the plants in small pots, which is better then bare root.

I have ordered trees, shrubs, raspberries, flower and vegetable seed from Jung's and have been pleased with the products, the customer service and the prices. When I received something that I thought was less than it should be (as has happened with every other mail order nursery I've ever worked with) they were always very interested in making me happy, whether I wanted a replacement or a refund. I received some sedum that was yellow, soft and moldy and when I called them they told me to go ahead and plant it and it might make it (turned out to be good advice) and meanwhile they got replacement plants out to me promptly. I will order from them again and am anxiously awaiting the spring catalog.

I placed my first order with Jung this year, only two different flower varieties - had poor germination with both, but especially the African daisies. I wrote to them in April asking how to germinate and explaining all the different conditions I had tried (including the ones on the package). They responded quickly, and promised new seeds. The seeds never arrived. It wasn't worth the hassle to try to get them replaced. I'll just shop elsewhere next year. I've had too many good experiences elsewhere.

I ordered 9 bare root roses from Jung's and all except one flourished. The sickly one was replaced, but I planted too late and it is not very happy as of this writing, but I blame myself for not requesting a replacement earlier. Their bare root roses were much bigger with more roots than any of the bare root roses available locally. I would recommend them but I wonder if they give you the wimpier plants if you buy one of their inexpensive collections. Also they have the best selection of roses for a non-specialty catalog, including antiques, Austins, and Rugosas. I highly recommend them.

I live about two miles from one of the Jung's stores in the Madison, WI area. All I can say is I have bought from them and other local nurseries as well as mail order companies and the bulbs, plants, and seeds from Jung's aren't on my great or even good quality list. I have had much better luck with the two other nurseries in the area, and the bulbs I got from them were moldy. Their staff always seems "swamped" and is usually less knowledgeable than the staff at the other local companies. I have had better luck and cheaper prices even from mail order suppliers. I have tried them over and over, thinking I just had bad luck with one thing or another-and it's always the same. Mediocre results at best. NO THANKS!

I ordered 10 hostas and several other plants and several packets of seed (about $100 total). Two items were cancelled almost immediately - refund check came within 10 days of order - plenty of time to order elsewhere. Prices seem to be somewhat lower than other reputable catalogs. Hostas were mostly single eye but all in good condition and grew well, as did other plants and seeds. This year's order will probably double.

We live in NE Wisconsin and have been ordering sweet potato plants from Jung's for the last 8 years. Have tried other sources and always go back to Jung's. I travel to Madison on a monthly basis and have purchased fruit trees, apple trees, shrubs, etc. in their stores. All have done very well and have been larger than what I would get at local nurseries. Bare root items that we have purchased mail order from them have also done well and have been of good size and in good condition upon arrival. In the spring of 97 I ordered 4- Carefree Wonder roses from this company. All were shipped bareroot. I have never ordered or planted roses this way. The roots were about 1.5 ft long and spindly looking. I followed their planting instructions and I had blossoms up until Thanksgiving (Zone 5). I plan on ordering more for next spring to make a rose hedge. Very Happy with these guys.
