"Most nepenthes species have two forms of pitchers, before they start to form vines and climb up the canopy they would have lower pitchers to trap ground invertebrates (e.g. ants). These pitchers are usually more colorful, large and showy.

Nepenthes sanguinea upper pitcher is formed when the plant has entered its climbing stage (again, to take advantage of the different invertebrates that live higher up in the canopy). These pitchers are usually smaller and lighter so that they don't collapse from the weight of the prey being captured.

The pitchers are actually modified leaves and the 'leaves' of nepenthes are enlarged petioles (leaf blades)."
