The aphids and slugs absolutely love them though. A few winters ago we had some cold snaps that got down to 10 degrees, and I lost all but a few of my monster kale. I still have one left after 3 years, and it looks more like a small tree than a kale. It literally has branches. One other thing to consider about this plant... imagine the rotting cabbage smell from a normal kale. Now multiply it by several times. When this one dies or has some leaves drop, the smell is nearly as intense and far-reaching as my carrion flowers and dragon arum.
