I bought it intentionally, of course, but e...Read Moreven while I saw the label "Heliconia" I was thinking "Hedychium." Hedychiums are more winter-hardy than Heliconia and can often be overwintered either with protection or in the garage. So once I got home and relialized that I actually bought a Heliconia, I had to look it up. The size is nice, the leaves pretty, but it blooms in autumn. With tropical plants, "blooms in autumn" often means that the plant will start showing buds the day before the first heavy, killing frost. My particular plant must not have read the description because it's blooming now in August. But then I read that the blooms are held below the foliage. Below the foliage? What's the point? My plant is adhering to that part of its description. My house has limited space for houseplants so this guy may be let go. That the blooms are hidden in the foliage makes me somewhat indifferent to its fate. Next year I'll pay better attention and look for a dwarf Hedychium.
From what i have read and experienced, this is the best Heliconia to grow in pots. Also takes more shade than most Heliconias, although on the west coast our cool shade slows growth. Best in the warmest ,brightest spot in the garden without hot direct sun. In tropical, humid areas it is said to take full sun.Watch for mealys. The flowers are very large for the plant and look like an upright "lobster claw" type. Most smaller Heliconias have less flamboyant bird of paradise type flowers. Mine is blooming at one foot in October. Just a beautiful front porch potted plant.
