I need help with what I believe to be the Mauna Loa variety of the Peace Lily. I just received two large ones (that look like dark banana...Read More plants) as a pool warming. Bad idea. Clearly, none of us (the givers or the receivers) knew this was an indoor plant or one that shouldn't be kept anywhere over 75 degrees. We're in the middle of a hot, Houston summer, and temps are nearing 100 degrees. We also placed them in full sun. In one day they had severely drooped, so we immediately repotted them, thinking that was the problem. Our friends called them banana plants so we had no idea the temperature could be affecting them. The next day they were black, and I noticed the little tag for the first time, which said they were Peace Lilies and were indoor plants.
This plant loves water! If you should ever come home from a few days away and find this plant completely wilted, just give it some water...Read More and in an hour or two it will be back to normal. We bought ours from Costco a year ago and we've had lots of new leaves but no flowers yet.
Update: We double-potted ours to keep the soil from drying out and it hasn't wilted since then. Both plants have flowered. Flower stays a long time before turning brown.

Have had this plant for about a year and a half now, never really new it was a "Supreme" variety, but always figured it had to be differe...Read Morent from regular Spath's given it's giant size. The flower is also huge. After blooming I noticed the new leaves get a lot smaller for a few months (I guess the bloom drained the plant), but they are back to normal now.
Our plant loves water... almost to the point it likes the soil moist all the time.
If it's truly called Mauna Loa Supreme, that's ironic. It previously was the only plant we had in our apartment that didn't have a tie to Hawaii. I guess now it does.
Great plant though. Would highly recommend to others.
This is an attractive, large-leaved Spathiphyllum variety. I'm not sure if it is 'Supreme', 'Mauna Loa Supreme' or another hybrid. Still,...Read More because of the beautiful, all-green (when mature) large flowers (much larger than the normal 'Mauna Loa' variety), I think it is 'Mauna Loa Supreme' (see the photos I posted).
The 'Supreme' Spathiphyllum varieties have large, green leaves that are often oval-shaped to somewhat pointed, and are wider than other Spathiphyllum varieties. 'Mauna Loa Supreme' has lush, lance-shaped, tropical dark green, shiny foilage leaves that are large and wide. The young flowers are all-white and pointed when just emerging and growing under the leaves (they are closed, rounded, pointed and too young to open then). Once they poke just above the leaves, the start to and eventually open. They are still white at that stage, but as they get older they start to get green streeks on the back and front. They get beautiful markings as they grow larger, and get greener and greener. Soon it has lots of green streaks on it. Very tropical. It continues to get greener. When the spadix emerges, it is tan or brownish-white and blooms with lots of small ridges and small, grayish to white, inconspicuous (but fragrant and abundant upon a closer look) flowers. The flowers have a strong fragrant smell, and is slightly sweet with a spicy smell mixed in. When the flower (bract) is fully mature, it is a beautiful, deep, all-green color. Even the spadix turns somewhat greenish. Very tropical and spectacular or beautiful. It seems to bloom a fairly long time (which is an advantage), but it looses it's fragrance after at least a few days. The flowers (bracts) are about 2 inches wide when mature and large compared to other Spathiphyllums. The new leaves are light green and fragile, but get bigger, darker green, and lusher as they grow. Young, white "flowers" (bracts) that have not yet matured but are growing are especially fragrant.
This plant's leaves burn severely in too much sun. If you buy it, even leaving it in a hot car for just several minutes will damage and burn the leaves, leaving them all black. Does NOT TOLERATE full sun. Likes partial sun (at the most). It thrives in light shade, partial shade, and full shade. Do NOT let it get more than partial sun. The soil must be kept moist and damp, and evenly moist.
NOTES - I bought this plant from Publix, where it was being sold. After killing the first one I bought by leaving it in the car (was too hot and burned the leaves) while doing something, this one was bought after doing something. The air conditioner was on in the car to keept it cool, and I shaded it until I put it in the house. It seems to grow well indoors in my house (which is cool to somewhat humid or average warmth or fairly warm - perfect for this plant) in the location near the window I put it, where it gets enough sun but is in shade. Right now it has two flowers (one mature all-green one and younger, growing white one which is starting to get the greenish streaks) blooming, and there are 2 more, white flowers starting to grow under the leaves but have not yet emerged or bloomed yet. It is growing flowers fairly quickly and is thriving for now. It gets water regularly to keep the soil damp and evenly moist.
Overall, this is a great and easy-to-grow plant, as long as it gets the proper conditions (see above, earlier in this post). It really adds a tropical look, especially to a living room space (which is where I put it, near a couch in shade near a window where it gets some slight sun just enough to light the living room). It is useful for growing indoors, and seems to be commonly grown. Should be encouraged!
