There was a large population at Prairie Crossing in Grayslake, Illinois, where I used to live. The existence of a man made lake and lots of wetland encouraged these beautiful creatures to hang around.

At one time, the beautiful plumes of the Snowy Egret were in great demand by market hunters as decorations for women's hats. This reduced the population of the species to dangerously low levels.
