Aloe perfoliata var. mitriformis is a colony forming plant that is reluctant to crawl, but can, though does not retain the leaves along the stem so much as Aloe distans does. It quickly adopts a deep red coloration when stressed by cold or drought. This form of Aloe perfoliata seems to perform pretty well in shade, unlike Aloe comptonii which seems to rot in shady environments.
