As a twining vine, it can sometimes have harmful effects on surrounding plants. In my neighborhood I have observed it scramble over and smother a dogwood in a matter of two years. Not as invasive as the superficially similar Japanese knotweed or hedge bindweed, it is nevertheless not a plant that I would recommend growing outdoors in North America.

I had to wait till this year to get better pictures. I did move it from the mostly shaded south side of the garage to the east and have been watering it. It has to be dug very small as it seems to have a deep tap root when it gets bigger. It's beautiful, carefree, and I love it!
