Lily Lovers, it is time...........

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Hi Debi Z,

Your lilies are just fab. A note to you about your tenufolium or pumilum. The bulbs only last 3 or 4 years usually. I always let one go to seed and then sprinkle the seed around the stem. This way you will always have this lily in your garden plus it will be nice big clump before long.

Hi Trunnels,
I checked with Teresa and she said the underplant is indeed a garden mum. She bought it at Wal-Mart in a 4" pot two years ago at an end of season sale, no name tag. It sure grows well where she planted it.

Oh Kooger,
The reason I couldn't answer last night was the 2005 Sports Illustrated Swimwear Special was on, and since my DW gave me a TiVo for Christmas, I wanted to be ready in case there were any "wardrobe malfunctions". :-)

Oh Ron, you boys are all alike! :)

Terrie- I think I did, but I'm not sure. Did you happen to see my review of Springhill? I have ordered from them several times. It's really hit or miss ya know? I see lots of complaints about the way the plants were shipped, but mine have always been great in that department. Very well packed. And then complaints that they aren't responsive. Well they have always emailed me when my order was shipped, honored their money back policy, very nice, etc. Now the deal is the plants are TINY! They need to be babied a bit. And sometimes they do take a while to get going. I have ordered lots of stuff from them and anything that died I got $ back for or a replacement certificate. As long as you take them for what they are, and understand that the plants are cheaper than other nurseries for a reason (they are small), I think they are fine. Just my experience with them though.

Yucaipa, CA(Zone 9a)

I've been ordering, buying Lilies like crazy this year.

Does anyone have any comments about Monte Negro?

I've had my eye on it for several years. Last year I didn't
see it offered anywhere, but I just got the Springhill Catalog
& they have it--6 for $10. What do you think?

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

KE6KAD, I have extra Monte Negro, if you wish to trade other lily or lilies for them?
I have both, tall and dwarf.
Let me know, OK?

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

I think I'd find it somewhere else - here's their Watchdog file... http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/188/

Why buy lilium bulbs/iris/hems from a generalist nursery when you have such wonderful lilium/iris specialist nurseries in the US> When buying from them, you can be assured of the correct item
or a quick replacement. Also, far better bulbs, packed properly - usually.

Another thing. In order to stop the spread of !@#$ lily beetle or iris borer, please please, always soak ALL bulbs etc in a mixture of 10% chlorox to 90% water for at least 30 mins then rinse well, before planting in your garden. Immerse the whatevers COMPLETELY>

Inanda, NOW you tell me... lol.. I planted some iris last week... and I didnt soak them.. and I DO have something making holes in my beds.... sigh... Starr

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow, I never heard about soaking bulbs before planting. Like I've said before, I learn something on DG every day. Thanks, inanda.

I have never soaked my bulbs but I will try to do so in the future! Been enjoying all the lily pics. Here is a lily I had in my previous house but not here yet. Hey, it gives me something to look forward to...

That was a Casa Rosa. Here's Black Dragon also from my former garden. (The bluish leaves are from a Plume poppy which you should NEVER plant unless you like very tall invasives!! I worked madly to keep it under control but it was sprouting 5 feet away from where I planted it!)

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

boojum, Great pics! I was the very proud adopter of Casa Rosa last fall and now I can hardly wait for it to bloom. I really like your 'Dancing Eyes photo, it is so crisp and clean.

debi_z, thanks for taking us along to your lily garden, my want to have it list just keeps growing!

Here is another who's name was not added to the pic, think it might be 'Royal Respect' a white LA Hybrid

Maxine,

I'm sorry, the few Lilies I have haven't done well
at all.

1 got knocked down 3 years in a row!! (the roofers
did it 1 yr, I can't remember what happened the
other 2 yrs.).

And I wasn't watering correctly. Those poor things
tried over & over every year. I have high hopes for
them this year; unless they've drowned from all the
rains we've had. Since they've kept trying for
several years against all odds; they should do
well, now that I've got the watering part down pat.

I've ordered/bought a whole bunch more cuz
I'm so optomistic!! Monte Negro is 1 that caught
my eye a couple years ago & I've never
forgotten it for some reason.

Thank-you for offering to trade. Just before I
came here, I answered an E-Mail from someone
who wants to share. Thanks again.

Wow! I love that pink pineapple lily! Never seen one of those before.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

I agree about the pink pineapple lily it is very nice!!! I am sure I have some more room somewhere!

These are tigrida (spelling is probably off) They are in the lily family and I really like them even though I have to store the bulbs for winter.

Wanda sent me these bulbs last spring and I really enjoyed them blooming all most the whole month of August. I think they are orchid lilies if I have them identified properly.

I don't remember the name of this trumpet except Royal something. It made a nice contrast with the plain white ones.

They are beautiful Alice! I love that tigrida! Thanks for sharing them. =)

Could these be the same thing? The package
says they're Gladiolus Callianthus Acidanthera
Murielae. What a mouth full!!

I haven't planted them yet; waiting for the rains
to stop. Bought them at the 99c store!!

I think I've seen them or something very similar
in catalogs under the name Peacock Orchids.

They're growing right in the package, so whatever
they are, I better get them in the ground soon!!

Thumbnail by KE6KAD
Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

If its not the same thing, its go to be a twin sister or brother! Thanks so much for the information, I can make a tag for the little guys now. And yes when I think about it Peacock sounds better than my Orchid thoughts!

MGH I have some seeds for the tigrida if you would like some? They take 2 years from seed but are really pretty easy to grow.
I am sure you would not have to take them in during the winter either. I will check in the database about the hardiness, but I think they are hardy in your zone 8.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Alice, you have mail! =)

Alice, those bulbs were labeled as Peacock Orchids when I bought them. Looks like they bloom better for you than me---

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

They were probably labeled properly when they got here and I lost it somewhere along the line!!!!

At least now I know where I got the orchid part from!!! Thanks for getting me back on the straight and narrow!

I know mine were in full sun is that where you had them also?? Maybe the bulbs just had to mature for longer than most.

They were lovely last year, and I really enjoyed them a lot!!!

I got the bulbs out this afternoon and stuck them in some pots to get an early start!
