Gita: I'd LOVE a teeny tiny hosta if there are any available -- put me at the end of the line. I have a little section just for tiny hostas, on top of a retaining wall so they are at eye level! I just love looking at them. They are so sweet.
ssg: Burgundy Glow Ajuga has never done well for me....
Mid-Atlantic Fall Plant Swap
Oh so maybe that's why mine hasn't done anything in 2 years! That's too bad... Burgundy Glow is the perfect color for this spot, but the darker ajugas are definitely more robust.
Have you down for one--Jill and Happy.
These would fit in a tea cup.....
G.
Thanks, Gita!
Catmint--You have me down for a Rudbeckia hirta seeds.
What kind are they? Got a picture?
SS---
You have me down for Campanulas. What kind? Oicture, please?
Also--You want some Lobelia Cardinalis. Do you already have one?
if you do--these will produce new plants clustered around the base.
These can be transplanted in the spring.
I may be able to get you a couple from my neighbor--not sure they are rooted?
She has them everywhere....
I will ask. Gita
Gita, I would really love to have a teeny tiny Hosta for the faerie garden I am constructing. I admit it, I really am.
fairy gardens are all the rage...
Gita: Many many thanks!
LOL...GT you're funny. I really don't get the fairy garden craze.
I guess whimsy grows with advancing years. ;-)
haha. I never would have thought I'd enjoy it, until this year.
Alright, who wants a full size Strelitzia? Bold tropical accent! Will I end up putting it on Craigslist?
sally--
Do you want one of the mini Hostas for YOUR Faerie garden?
I said i will reserve one for you....you did not say anything...LMK.
*********************************
David--Of course! I will put one mini Hosta aside for you.
In my opinion--whimsy in our older years just allows us to be 'children" again.
It allows us to play....like women who still have their doll houses...
NOTHING wrong with that! Better than grumpy old men or women.
Jeff--You just aren't old enough yet...so---you "don't get it!"
Just wait until you have kids! You will turn into mush.
Mini Hosta blooms--in 2013...AWWWW....
Gita, I'd written that when I first requested campanulas from you, but I just edited it out.
I don't have any Lobelia cardinalis yet. I heard hummingbirds loved it so wanted to include it in my hummingbird garden. It'd be great if your neighbor had some to share!
Hey Holly, my friend Cheryl will be able to come again this time.
That's great news I like Cheryl.
Catmint--You have me down for a Rudbeckia hirta seeds.
What kind are they? Got a picture?
Gita, this is the R. hirta that grew from the seeds you gave me at the swap in Feb. At one point, you had asked if you could have some seeds back from it. It has grown very well and is almost ready to bloom, but hasn't opened yet. I'll post a photo as soon as it blooms.
Holly, we won't be able to make it...booo. thanks for inviting us though. I just heard from my Aunt and they will be in town on the same weekend. Hope to maybe see everyone in the spring if there is a swap
Gita, thanks for thinking of me but I'm afraid the troll garden is full and the tree roots seem very inhospitable this time of year. I have your Mouse Ears in there. I didn't want to dig too much around the other side because that's where the Crocus is and they could be shallow. The Crocus tommassinianus is what inspired me.
Technically, I have a little blue troll garden. A three inch tall ceramic troll 'plant spike' so he stays where I put him. I did it this spring but am afraid of the plants and doodads getting buried in leaves this fall.
I cannot help finding and collecting tiny interesting bits of old pottery and blue glass in the river, and now I blame the troll on this obsession. I collect it for him.
Wind so sorry you can't come but I know you will have a great time with your Aunt.
Sally--I have a basket-full of sea shells--all sizes.
Would you like some for your troll garden?
Do you have a picture of the troll garden? Please show us....
Gita
Cat--I would love some of the seeds--as mine seem to be always
mixed up withother plants....
Pictures too--when they bloom. Thanks. G.
Does anyone know what is going on with the "edits" problem on the Haves/Wants thread? Sometimes it works -- and sometimes (like today) it doesn't....
they're still trouble-shooting the "fixes." there's a thread on the DG forum to report problems.
I would like dried Sea Oats nice long stems please. I'll have a few vases sitting around for you to put them in. Thanks.
Holly: I wish I had some to bring....
Gita, you're so kind to offer. Here's my problem. I put the shells down, then leaves fall and dog runs thru it, and then I am picking through the crap to rescue the shells. Shells end up in compost. Sorry but my theme this year has been Don't make any extra work. So if you don't care if I toss the shells in the garden and forget them that's fine, BUT I would feel it's a waste of your collecting them.
Yes I act calm cool and collected but I am pretty tight on time and spend too much time on the computer already. I apologize for being chintzy with pictures.
Oh boy Holly. I just trashed a bunch yesterday. But I have more. They are so pretty in a vase.
happy= beware the horrible self sowing of sea oats.
Happy--Sally is right.
I lived through the nightmares of the sea oats coming up all over my YUK bed.
For years--I yanked out the seedlings--which is tough on the hands.
Those stems are wiry--the roots are deep--and the seeds seem to live forever.
The only way you can deal with this is cut the oat heads off before they dry.
They are pretty when green--but when they dry--the seeds fly everywhere.
It has, probably, been 6 or 7 years since I had them--and some still come up.
One of these seedlings is what I have potted up and available. Any takers?
Gita
Holly, are you pulling our collective legs, or did I miss something? I know you know about the protected status of sea oats... although I guess somebody might have Northern Sea Oats to pick. :-)
I have a few but not many and I wanted them for Josh's Wedding. I did know they were protected but figured I could take them to the beach from our gardens.
When we were in NC, somebody brought up the topic, and we discovered via google that you can legally have sea oats (real ones) in your garden or in your flower arrangements, but they have to come from native plant nurseries. Also looks like you can get them from TX, so they might not be protected there (sand dunes being less vital along the Gulf coast). https://www.etsy.com/listing/195788880/elegant-dried-sea-oats?ref=unav_listing
Wish I had some out back for you in the Wild Weedpatch!
Are "Sea Oats" the same as Northern Sea Oats? I had the latter..
I can't believe these would be a "protected" plant...On the sea shores..maybe..
but NOT in gardens.
I had enough 'war" with them when I had them here...it was akin to constantly
seeing shoots from my Trumpet Vine coming up everywhere years ago.
Lesson learned--DO NOT plant invasive plants in a small development plot.
G.
Gita: I agree -- I wasn't wishing I had them -- just sorry I couldn't bring any to Holly -- I have steered clear of them because of the re-seeding problem. I have enough problems with perennial ageratum and boneset and bishop's weed and ....
Northern sea oats are actually a different species, and "regular" sea oats aren't endangered or anything, just protected as with a "do not disturb" sign because they are such a vital part of dune-building and barrier island ecology. Darius had a good article about them... http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2488/
I decided I will dig up and pot up as many new clumps of the
Campanula Elizabeth as I can get out of this overgrown pot.
SO--if you were interested--please post here....
You can always figure out some way to support the thin stems and
have them blooming upright. Just use your nogging.
Gita
great thing here is- you could give away entire plants, and get them back later if you change your mind!
Gita, I'm interested but won't be at the swap. I had some from a couple years ago but my weedy woods smothered it.
Paul--
One of the divisions was so big--I planted it back right in the same
pot I dug it out of. One beautiful, big clump--right in the middle. This pot is yours!
I can baby sit this pot for you too. Will tag it. I am good at baby-sitting plants...;o)
....they get very good care here....
Giving one of the big pots to a man at the HD. He already had one--and lost it.
Keeping one of the fuller ones for myself. I want to see them all bloom!!
I don't understand how people can "lose" plants that thrive no matter what?
Inattention? Lack of watering? Not taking regular walks in one's garden to
check on things? Getting more plants than they can take care of?? AHA!!! OH, Yeah!
Any of the above?.........check! G.
We will meet some time--or I can pass it on to any of your close-by DG'ers.
Who would you prefer? SS?... Happy?....Terri?...Cat?....
LMK. If they are at the swap--I can pass it on to one of them.
...AND.......my car is slowly filling up! Gotta watch it--3 of us riding in my small car
won't leave much room for plants.
I don't know. Ssg is my usual plant fairy. I have a plant for Sally though..
The weeds smothered mine out. I guess lack of attention and too many plants. :)
Gita, I'd be happy to be Paul's plant fairy for the campanula.
too many plants, too little time.
I'm willing to take over a pot of Campanula Elizabeth for Terp; Actually, since I have a big patch of it myself, if/when Terp and I can exchange, I can just give him some from mine.
