Mid-Atlantic Fall Plant Swap

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Seq, thank you. I will go edit out the apostrophes. I typed mine in Word and copied them into DG. That probably didn't help :-).

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Sure! I left mine in, I'm a rebel....LOL

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

There are a few "Holy Ferns" on clearance at HD. $3.
There's about 5 or 6. These don't even look like ferns....

If anyone HAS TO have it--I can pick them up tomorrow....
Paul???? David???

And.......here we go again!.........:o).

I'm way behind in planning for the swap, but wanted to let you know that I am digging out today:

->Ajania pacifica (originally from Gita): I have a bumper crop, http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=h600
->Tradescantia Concord Grape, http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=w670 These were originally from Santa Rosa and have been thriving, as Tradescantia is wont to do....

Let me know if you want any.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Gita, yes on one of the holly ferns for us, please. Might as well make it two. I feel my arm being twisted! Thanks.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK!
You two are so predictable on what I think you would like to have. :o)
Aren't you glad I know this? Will pick up two for you.

Need to send Paul a D-mail--maybe he wants one too.
Just told Donner about these..Wonder if she will want one.????

These are so weird looking that I don't think anyone would be buying them.
I will see tomorrow--I hope they are all still there.....Another $3 deal!!!

Other $3 "deals" are:

A lot of Perennial Salvias--Purple Coneflowers--a different blooming (fuzzy bloom) Monarda--
a pretty, butter-yellow blooms, Gaillardia--hmmmm...that's all i can think of sitting here
typing away. Getting close to my bed-time...memory is blurring....

Will let you know when I get these....and I thought my car was going to be
half empty after all the Astilbes having been picked up!!! HUH?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have an offer to anyone interested---just don't ask me how to go about it..

As many of you know--I have the most beautiful,Camellia bush. "Bob Hope".
95%of the bloom buds all froze last winter-so it did not have any blooms to
speak of this spring.
Relieved of the burden of blooming, My Camellia, instead, grew wider and wider
and is now a bit too tall and too sprawled.

I would like to trim it back a bit--all around...and this is the ideal time to do so-
according to my old Mentor--Mike Quinn in GA,

Now--rooting camellia cuttings is not an easy thing. Woody cuttings take some
special know-how. Mike Quinn knew how--and I once sent him a box-full
of cuttings. he rooted all of them.

If any of you want to try to root some of these cuttings--let me know and i will
bring them to the swap.

My Camellia is, truly, beautiful. Triple red blooms with a yellow throat. HUGE!
It usually blooms some time April/May.

Here's some pictures....LMK if you would like to try it...

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Aw, Jen, nooo! Say it ain't so!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks so much, Gita. I saw them at a nursery last month, and then another one this past weekend, but didn't much care for the prices.
Predictable Pat

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Pat---

Should I just start calling you "PP"?
Hmmm....That DOES have another meaning, though...

What if I used it backwards-like your DG name?

SO--I will use "PP" instead. There...much better.............:->

atiG

LOL

This is another--"Anyone want some of these plants"??? NOT from HD....

A few years ago, many of us got this plant from Greenthumb.
It is Campanula "Elizabeth"...Beautiful, pendulous, pink, bell-shaped blooms.

Here's the"problem'.....they multiply like crazy!
I have 3 lg. pots of it--with new plants all around the perimeter.
Growing in pots keeps them in bounds.
But--each new plant can be dug away and potted and you will have a nice, new
bloomer.

I could dig away and pot up unlimited number of these. Just ask!

Here is what they look like in bloom...so sweet....

Holly or Rick--

Have you posted detailed driving directions anywhere yet?
For us without a GPS....

Thanks--Gita

No Gita, I will send out my address in a D-mail next week or as soon as I get a chance.

Thanks. Gita

Hi Holly and Ric, Harry and I are hoping to come, but have to check with my Aunt to see when in September they are going to be visiting. I'm hoping it's not the weekend of your swap. I'm sure your swap will be a wonderful event as it always is at your place. I'd like to come just to see everyone more than actually swapping plants. I'd be more interested in seeds and have seeds to share. I'm more of a spring plant swapper I think. I don't want to add many more plants to my plant this pile!! And, if we can make it I would definitely want to make a stepping stone! that is so neat you are doing that too

I'll be back in touch
thanks for hosting ^_^

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Wind I sure hope it fits into your schedule, I would love to see you and Harry again.

ditto!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have all these plants still available. Please D-mail me if you are interested
in any of them. I simply need to lessen the number of plants to bring in for the winter...

1--Is anyone interested in one of the Holly Ferns? David and Pat asked for 2,
I picked up one extra. Clearanced at HD for $3ea..
I know Pat will take it if no one else is interested. They are really healthy.

2--Is anyone interested in Brazilian Plume rooted cutting? 4" pots. I have 4 left.
These will grow during the winter (inside) and bloom for you next summer (outside).

3--Would anyone like a nice, started pot of rooted Swedish Ivy? Nice and full. (5)

4--I still have plenty of packages of the bamboo stakes--3' long, pk. of 25. $2.50.

5--I would also like to give away, as many as I can, of my small Holiday Cactus
and both kinds of Spider plants. Reg. and Curly.

This IS a plant Swap--right? Gita

David was away when you posted about the Holly Ferns and asked why I only asked for 2. We will gladly take the third one, atiG. Thanks!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

atiG: If you really have extra holiday cactuses that you no longer want, I'd love one. And I'd take a pack or two of bamboo stakes if that would help, but don't want to take them from anyone else who needs them.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Dear PP (predictale pat)--

Will gladly pass the 3rd fern off to you. If you want a couple more-IF there are any left--
I can pick them up Tuesday. LMK

Happy--

The CC's I would give you are fairly small . Some have bloomed already,
but not all. I will try to pick out some that have bloomed--and the color will be on the tag.
I will try to transplant them in 4" pots. How many would you like?
You can keep these outside in bright shade until the weather gets into the 50"s or
high 40's. They need a cold snap to set blooms. Most of my bigger ones,
by the time I bring them in, are all in bud.

As for the bamboo stakes--I have about a dozen packages left. Not to worry!
Was stacking up with the great 50% off sale.

G.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita: That would be great -- don't bother to transplant -- I can do that -- I mean, it's fine if you want to but please don't go to any trouble -- whatever number you pick is perfect. They'll go behind my kitchen sink in the winter so I'll see them all the time. My mom used to love holiday cactuses so I'm a little sentimental about them. We have just one now.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK! But--some of these are in bathroom cups. I think they would like
to be upgrades to at least a Yogurt cup. :o)

I will just do what i will do! OK? Will pick out some nice ones for you.
A few different colors....
Gita

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

That would be lovely, but I'd be delighted with bathroom cups! No need for an upgrade.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have been Googling and trying to ID the Holly fern I got at HD.
It does not say anything on the generic tag. Just "Ferns"

--The two I could find was either the Japanese Holly fern (Cyrtomium Falcatum.
However--this variety's leaves seemed a paler green and more spaced out on the stem

Or--Cyrtomium Falcatum Rochforddianum--this one had the shiny leaves
but--it also said that that this fern has "roughly fringed margins" on the leaves.
I looked--mine do not have that.

One other thing that may be of concern is the hardiness zone. On the generic tag
it says that hardiness is 30*F. Height--8" - 30". Hmm-seems kind of small...
In the above search Fern--it says it is zone 6-10.

David--does this mean it may not be all that hardy around here?
Can you do some research on your own and let me know asap?
We are both zone 7a.

Thought a couple close-ups may help. Plus--the 3 I have for you so far.
I think they look fantabulous! g.

David is away until late on Wednesday. If it turns out that they are not hardy, I guess they can come in for the winter. We have 2 huge Boston ferns that come in and the many bromeliads. Thanks for your concern, though. PP

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

pat--

I will still pick up the remaining 4 and save the receipt--just in case...

It may be tricky returning a clearanced plant, though. I think one cannot...

As Mary Lou of Bell (she's the boss) told me that--"once I mark something down and
clearance it--in the system, it has already been thrown out."

So--they will all be yours--no matter what. Maybe you have a shady hot spot
somewhere in your acreage???

Gita

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Gita, I will take an extra fern. You don't have to return them. I just love those Holly Ferns but I knew that it wasn't hardy in our area. I'm sure I can squeeze one into the GH this winter.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

We really were not thinking of returning them and will be delighted to have them, Gita. Thanks for thinking of us.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly

Sorry--but I have already told Pat I will pick them up for her--and she and
David want to have the remaining four.

Perhaps you can check another HD and see if they have any left...

Gita

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thats OK Gita, I was just offering to take them if you had more than you wanted.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Holly, if Gita gets all 4 today, we would be happy to have you take one. We can very easily do 2 groups of 3. Not a problem at all, and we wouldn't want your greenhouse to be empty!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Schedule update for me...

I'm working out details, but I'm planning to go with my parents on a fishing trip to Canada this year... Mom hasn't been able to go for a couple of years, but she thinks she'll be able to do the trip this year. If we go as scheduled, I'll be getting back Thursday before the swap, but if we need to delay to give Mom a few more days to recover after our beach trip last week, then I could end up missing the swap. I hope not, but "family first."

Currently, we have 19 bags of bulbs from ADR coming the week of the 8th that need to be split up and brought to the swap. If I get back Thursday or even Friday, that's do-able (although I probably won't be bringing much in the way of plants). If I miss the swap, I'll be looking for help with those; Jim & Joyanna will be home, so pick-up isn't a problem, and I can generate label slips and order sheets. We only have a few people involved in this; nowhere near the undertaking of last year's bulb fest. Or, I can ask ADR to send everything in October.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Nice of you, Pat -- we crossed, and I was just thinking that Holly needs a "holly" fern!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Too true!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Pat.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Critter -- I'm happy to help -- JLMK. I can pick up, split up and bring to the swap.
