Boy, you like your music symbols there! For Spring? Oh, not really sure, I am pretty much guaranteed to be somewhat in a semi-broke money situation at anytime. Like I was telling my friend here yesterday, "what do I need money for?, I don't need no steenking money!"! I didn't know greenbrain was into Better Homes and Gardens and Octagon Gardening! Not sure what M.E.N. is!
Kitties and squirrels? I think they've managed to find a way to live with each other. I still haven't ever seen that black and white cat catch a squirrel, but it still sits there and watches them, in hopes one will slip up!

Working at Home Depot in the nursery dep't would be interesting work. I heard employees of Home Depot can retire a millionaire if they stay there and do 401k or whatever they got for retirement. I think I heard collectively the employees own that company, maybe it's different now.
I'll find something to do this Spring I'm sure. Actually, I do have some warm weather projects to be mulled over, such as spray painting the eaves, installing some outdoor lighting and putting more touches on the backyard landscaping here.

Another hectic day. Just enough time to say "hello" before going to bed. Had to work late & then rushed to the ER to check on an elderly relative who was taken there from the nursing home with low O2 levels. He's stabilized & I finally made it home, had dinner, & am ready for bed.
Tomorrow is Friday, pay day, & I have a 3 day weekend! Woohoo!!! Good night all. ♥
Now, my big Spiderplant doesn't get directly attacked like it used to by the cats, it's too high up! But I tied this cloth/string up to it and Grubworm (the white cat) just goes crazy playing with that string!
Oh, that copper firebowl is still out there, I'm glad it won't rust because it gets all the way full of rainwater!
I remember those 3 day weekends! I used to have this job at a place called Serco where I worked 4 - 10 hour days then had Fri, Sat. and Sun. off every week. It was nice but I always felt like those 4 days were never long enuff on the spare time. You had to get to sleep at just the right time and hope your car or anything worked good and was ready to go on Monday! But, when Friday came it was like vacation was here again! I did that for over 3 years there, good times!
That's quite the blackberry thicket, green! I can't tell, is that a Bradford Pear or an edible Pear tree?

It's the most prolific Bartlett pear tree that provides my family, church family, relatives, co-workers, and neighbors with an abundance of pears every year. : )
We have one quart of sugarfree pear sauce left, & I just took the last blackberries from the freezer for a cobbler.

I have a 3 day weekend because Monday is President's Day. It's a bank holiday for me because the Federal Reserve Bank is closed. Since my oldest daughter has school (colleges are open), I'll be keeping my grand-daughter Chloe because public schools are closed. That worked out well for Carla that I'm off Monday. Chloe is my little gardening buddy. We'll probably starts some seeds together. : )
I have some seeds to start too. I have 1 packet of Marigolds, 2 packets of Zinnias, a packet of Sugarsnap Peas and a packet of cat grass seeds. The cat grass seeds are old, so I'm not sure if they'll sprout.
I was doing some yardwork for a friend in 2010 and he had a Pear tree in his backyard that had many Pears on it. I wonder if it's a Bartlett Pear too? Is this one like yours, greenbrain? -
He says his are edible too. Did you grow yours from a Pear seed? I tried it back then, I think one had sprouted then it died later.
If not you can get some seeds fro me ,, I do not many only got a half a dozen or so from a trade , they are growing they are oats , lots of mid season seeds , Might still find a few of them black Daylily seeds ,and sedums when they go to seed again ,,
Summer and things seem a way off this time of year , only saying I have not forgotten you , your still on my seed list ,
I forgot to add you might be aware of that the closer it gets to spring the colder it seems to feel ..

I bought pear tree from a local family owned nursery that went out of business years ago. It was picked out by and dedicated to my youngest daughter Nicole. I'd say that we planted it about 15 years ago. Your neighbor's tree does look like my pear tree. We had a Belle of Georgia peach tree (dedicated to Carla) that did well for about 5 years or more before it died; also from the same nursery. We loved the peaches, but not the fuzz. I grew Heritage raspberries for years, but they finally succumb to disease. The kids dedicated the crab apple tree to me. lol It was knocked down in a storm, but grew back from a sucker. It's just like the old tree now. I said that the tree is resilient like me.
I have a 5 in 1 fruit tree that makes peaches , even get one once in a while , everything on the planet gets them first , I have a 5 in 1 apple tree that set three green apples last year (not edible) Have a red scented plum tree that sets plums but I have never gotten a plum from the tree ,
I also have an Asian pear tree that might bloom for the first time this spring , but I am really not confident about getting any pears ,, wonder why ?lol

Oh, you have those multiple little fruit trees that I've seen advertised, juhur? I was just wondering, how can those trees really be all together like that, is that a 5 in 1 tree? I never understood how that tree can produce all different kinds of fruit because they are different species and stuff. Is the trunk all twisted to make it look like it's one tree but actually more than one plant, fruiting on separate branches?
I thought you had a Purple Plum tree that makes those ornamental plums, juhur?!

Well the 5 in 1 apple tree is easy to understand , all the same and bud grafted together .
The 5 in 1 fruit tree I don't understand either but it is bud grated also . the more branches you get grow when the tree begins the more the different type of fruit you get . Pretty trees though they always bloom profusely .
The Asian pear is suppose to be self pollinating , It will be there for what I believe to be three years this spring , it bloomed a couple of buds last year , and of course it was real small last year , nearer 12 or 13 ft tall and growing since ,and it is a full size pear tree not a dwarf .. IT is going to be a big one!!!
I am still trying to get a purple leaf plum , they make plums after about five or six years , takes them a while , but they are good!!!!

I am looking for fruit bushes and permanent food plants , to make a better food and easier food garden. No fruit and a couple of plate fulls of tomatoes from last years garden was pathetic , I would throw in the towel and walk from the gardening ring if not for memory of better times...I have grown more on two plants than I got from last years garden ,, man the thought is awful ....
Juhur7, if your pear tree does like mine, you'll suddenly go from a few to abundance in a year or two. Asian pears are nice. I've wanted an apple tree, but no space. If I had the space, I'd have an entire orchard! I almost planted a purple plum, but went with a japanese maple that died after a few years. Now, I wish that I'd planted the purple plum. They are beautiful; esp. with the pink blooms against the purple foliage. I didn't know that they made plums! These were my old nanking cherry bushes that I so loved. They died last summer. : ( Some new ones came up from seed, so I'm hoping that they do as well.

I planted shallots once and they did good. I like them, b ut they are so small to work with that I never planted them again. I think there are bigger sizes.

Is it the only pear tree around? They say they won't put out fruit without a pollunator, but I don't think so. A friend has an ancient tree, only one around and I canned 52 quarts the first year we picked.

That looks like a sugar pear.
Seeds will not come true and the chances of getting a good tree are like 1000/1. You need to buy a real tree to get a good one.
The 5/1's are grafted, but never a good buy. You can graft anything onto an existing tree.

Bp, Yes. My pear tree is alone. I was thrilled when a storm knocked down the neighbor's Bradford pear trees because they were casting an awlful shadow on my veggie garden. I actually ran out in the rain storm cheering! LOL

I see that we have folks on this thread from IA, IL, IN, MO, MN, & NE. Any that I missed? Abundant sunshine, breezy, and in the 30s today in the St. Louis metro area. Tomorrow is suppose to get up around 50 F. I'll probably take the bunnies out to play among the bamboo after church. I keep my gr-d every Sunday while her mom works the 3-10 evening shift, so she'll have a good time playing with the bunnies in the backyard.

Actually, it doesn't sound too good for me. I thought the interview went good, but afterward he says, "I have a bunch of interviews to do", he says with a sigh. Anyway, when that is said, in my experience, it's never good for me..lol
I have berry envy too! Last year was especially hot and dry, maybe that's why the poor production on your tomatoes and things, ju. The Asian Pear sounds like a big, small tree!
I knew last Winter was warm but they said on the news recently that the coldest it got here last Winter was 29°. I knew it was warm, but I never guessed that warm!
Yeow, those Nanking's have some nice flowers there, greenbrain! That emphysema is a terrible thing to have. Last week, a lady at my friend here's work just dropped to the floor and died unfortunately, unable to breathe, I don't think she had Emphysema though. I keep in touch with an elderly friend, he was a co-worker about 15-20 years ago. He has emphysema so bad he must stop every 10 feet or so and double over and get his breath, he says he thinks he is about done.

I have that tree 5 in 1 that makes peaches and am considering how to get some rootstock to graft onto, Most of the time the seeds are not worth trying after a big juicy peach gets chewed by a squirrel .. I have grown seeds from apples and gotten a Fuji type ,years ago out of about a dozen trees , Sometimes it works ...
I think it was Sally (billyp) who said generally stone fruits such as Peaches are monoecious (self-fruiting) and others dioecious.
I thought similar species generally means trees within the same genus. Thus, spruce and fir (for ex.) cannot be grafted (they are separate genera). Are these 5 in 1 trees unique there?
I have no idea ,bud grafting can be an art ,and the pro's seem to have found something different .Evidently plums and nectarines could be related.?

I think alot of the fruits are in the same genus or something like that, so the sub-genus fruits can be grafted together because they're in the same genus Prunus. I'm quoting from text, I'm not trying to be professor fruit or anything! lol Okay, that is kinda funny, maybe professor fruit isn't so bad! This is from Wikipedia -

I had something wrong up there you can't graft plants of a different genus, not species, plants of different species are in the same genus.
For instance, you can have lemons and oranges on the same tree.

From what I've seen, you don't need much besides a sharp knife, that tree tape and that paste or oil to seal the wounds which is probably the same as tree wound dressing.

I couldn't find the manufacturer site for Tina, all I could find for reselling new knives was this Orchardsedge site and some that get bidded on. Does anyone have any suggestions on grafting tools?
I'm around just busy like Will said. I have been working non-stop it seems like and I have been very tired. Not used to working long hours like this since they cut hours pretty bad at my other job. My last day off was Tues and my next day off is Tues. lol. I am looking forwards to sleeping in that day!!

I was using a really sharp Swiss army knife ,I have a box of X-acto tools and a box knife(RAZOR KNIFE) one of the solid ones will work ..

Ooooooh, razor knives? I'd be afraid of slicing my wrist and bleeding out or my finger! Grafting can't be too hard, I watched this one video where a lady did it in about a minute and a half.
"Garden Club" is what Home Depot calls it's membership thing for gardeners to send them deals and what not.

You can grow any size bush as long as you are willing to prune them every year or so to keep them the size you want.
I am trying to grow some Japanese apricot from seeds , then to graft the peach and nectarine branches, to the apricot , a never ending story you know..lol
I forgot to add that the clematis cutting attempt is still going also.

juhur7 I'd be glad to share some nanking cherry seeds once the newer plants start producing. When the bushes that died were at their peak, I had volunteers coming up all over the yard! The trailing blackberries were only a few little canes starting out, but they self layer. Where ever a cane touches the ground, it roots. "Johnny Appleseed" would have been upset with all that grafting! lol I read a very thick book about him last year, & all his trees were from seed because he thought that grafting was a form of "plant abuse". The apples from his trees were of very poor quality, so the pioneers mostly made hard cider from them. Living in IN, you probably know quite a bit about John Chapman.
Well, after reading all these new posts, I'm "tired" brain. lol I'll have to go back later and read again when my brain is "green".

Midwest and Ohio valley people usual are aware Johnny Appleseed, I was told that story 100's of times as a youngster .lol It is a good one what ever might be true though... He could be responsible for dolgo, fuji, and granny smith type apples..
