I've had a handful of orders from Jung in the past few years, and always been happy. This year I was so impressed that I decided I'd go to the trouble of reviewing here, where I always look, myself.

I could not be more pleased with what I ordered from Jung this Spring. Everything looked great, but I was specifically SO pleased with the Pope John Paul roses I ordered. They looked amazing. Planted them, and they have grown like gangbusters already. I'm more pleased with these, than any roses I've mail-ordered elsewhere, or even those I've purchased locally.

I would definitely recommend Jung. Not only has everything been great, from the 3 raspberries I ordered 5ish years ago and are now a large patch, to the Roses I mention above, but I feel that I've gotten very good service when needed (only once- I emailed to ask when the roses would arrive, very helpful).

The company withdrew money from my account on 03/12/2014, I requested confirmation of the shipment date and received an email stating that it would be received mid to late April at the latest. May 10th and I have still not received anything. I will be filing charges of online theft shortly. In contrast, I made a similar large order with Raintree Nursery on the same day, they did not make any charges against my account until they shipped the order which I received mid April with everything in great condition.

On May 28th, 2014, springmeadow added the following:

After numerous emails I did receive the majority of my order. Most of the plants arrived alive and in reasonable condition but four plants were dead at receipt, and three trees were never received. After contacting them again I was told my money would be refunded for the unshipped trees - that was two weeks ago, no refund has been made nor has any confirmation been sent regarding when I should expect to receive it.

After seeing a fair number of negative comments so I felt compelled to write in. I've been doing most of my veggie seed and plant business w/ Jung for the last 5 years after switching from Park's and Burpee (cost). I've had great luck with them, including this year's order and their customer service has been very, very good the few times I've had an issue. I also ordered from their sister companies, McClure& Zimmerman and Roots & Rhizomes and those orders were very good as well. Had a small issue with M&Z and they promptly sent a new plant, no questions asked.

I ordered three bare-root plum trees and two dwarf/semi-dwarf bare-root cherry trees for spring 2014 shipment. They arrived well packed, very much larger than I had expected, and with well-developed root systems. Miserable, cold, rainy/sleety weather caused a few days' delay in getting them into the ground, but the roots stayed moist in their moss packing. Jung had hardy varieties that I haven't seen elsewhere, which is important for me in Minneapolis.

I am not sure exactly how to review because the customer service person today was helpful. I put in a huge order, more than 40 plants, which should have arrived in March for my climate. Jung made a mistake and lumped me in with a town of a few hundred people 4000 feet higher in elevation. I called a month ago to get my plants shipped and they said they would ship. I got an email 2 weeks ago saying all had shipped, but only 4 had and the rest were not packaged yet. They took 2 weeks to get here and one was poorly packed and severely damaged. I called today to find out where the rest were and had to cancel my order because I will be gone for 3 weeks in May and they can't get here before I leave. No local nurseries offer unusual varieties and I am set back a whole year. The order was lots of fruit trees, grapes, etc...The woman waived their normal inability to refund and cancel at this late date since I had requested my plants come immediately a month ago because I was not only upset, but would have refused shipment, That is the only thing that elevated them from neutral from negative. Honestly, I just wanted my plants, is that too much to ask? Since when does it take 2 weeks in hot weather to ship from Wisconsin to Utah? I guess the bottom line from other reviews is go in person, but do not do mail order

On April 24th, 2014, deforestliz added the following:

For the record I do not live in Alta Utah, it has a few hundred people and is 4000 feet higher in elevation, they are going by our shared zip code. I am in Sandy which has a few hundred thousand and is down in the valley, not in the mountains. This is the problem Jung had when I called, but they did not ship at that time as requested.

This happened once before with raintree and I had to beg them to send me my plants earlier for the replacement plants. Half of the original batch survived, but all the replacement plants were fine because March is the proper planting time for bare root here.
On May 3rd, 2014, deforestliz changed the rating from neutral to negative and added the following:

I have to downgrade this review to negative as it seems the customer service person failed to cancel the rest of my order and I will be contacting my credit card company to dispute charges and will be in conflict with these people for who knows how long. I just got an email telling me they shipped my philberts which will arrive after I am long gone. These will sit around unopened and be returned to sender. I don't know what part of out of town these people did not grasp. I have never had a problem like this before and I have moved so many times that I have been ordering plants long distance for 23 years now. They are like the torture that keeps on torturing. I would not wish this hassle on anyone. I thought everything was resolved and it is not. If they continue to send plants while I am gone and 2 months after proper planting time (It was in the 80's yesterday with beating mountain sun) they will be returned when I get back dead as doornails. They had more than a month to get it right after I contacted them. I will let you all know if we can get this resolved without going to small claims court.

My experience with Jung Seed seems to be rather mixed. I have had some really great products from them, and other times, not so much.

I have been a customer of theirs for over 30 years. When we had our home in SE WI, I bought everything from them - seeds, trees, berry bushes, perennials, products. While you may occasionally have a tree that didn't make it through transplant or a flower that didn't overwinter, it was a rare occurrence.

Over the years, I have been buying a lot of perennials and bulbs. When I get them, they are often not blooming. I will hand it to Jung's -- the plants are always healthy and always grow well. When I first started buy things I had no problems. Even the items that I buy as bare root perennials that look like withered up nothings, but a little soil and water will make them flourish with life. While their products still grow well and are healthy, it seems that I buy 'surprises' more often. By surprise, I mean you have a coneflower that is supposed to have red-orange flowers and it blooms purple. They are good about replacing things if you go to the garden center, but sometimes you get it home and it blooms the wrong color again. Is it that someone mixed up the cuttings? The supplier mixed it up? Who knows. But it makes me hesitate to buy something down the road. Where is their quality control?

I have learned that it is better to go through the gardening center to purchase items than to do it through mail order. And, given that I live close enough, I have that luxury. I used to feel confident in calling their catalog with questions and concerns. I originally talked for years to a man named Dwayne, and then more recently to a lady names Treena(spelling?). Both were very smart and seemed to know exactly what they were talking about. You could tell that these people were gardeners! The last couple years when I have called their catalog, I have been told that they are no longer available and I instead get to talk to people that have no idea what is going on. I've been placing orders and have people that cannot even pronounce the names of the plants. Day-ha-las (Dahlias). Hoe-stas (Hostas). Other times, when I called in with questions or with issues about a plant I bought, I've been told answers that make no sense at all, like the irises I bought in 2012 that were supposed to be deep blue and bloomed white in 2013 will darken in color to the correct color over the years. It may take 3-5 years to get to their correct color. Really? I don't think so. I realize that I may be picking, but as a place with plants, I would expect those I speak with to have actually gardened. Yes, I ask, and it seems that a warm body is enough to make you a gardening 'expert'. It's like having a person working in the computer section at Best Buy that has never used one.

Another thing that doesn't settle well with me is that we have had a lot of issues with seed not growing the way it was supposed to. There are been times when we order a packet of seeds and it looks like we bought a mixed packet of seeds -- especially peas. (It's worse with their Totally Tomatoes items -- see comment there). We had Cajun Belle pepper a few years ago that was supposed to be mild that was so hot that you could scald your digestive system to the intestines by putting just one in a pot of soup. And trust me, we eat a lot of chilis and jalapenos, so it's not like we don't know what heat is. This year, we had the Dick's Pick Butternut that was supposed to be wonderful, but ended up being this little mini butternut squashes that fit in the palm of your hand. I realize that 'all things are relative' when it comes to gardening because your particular climate can greatly affect the outcome of the plants. But when your other peppers aren't suddenly wildly hot or your other butternut varieties (Waltham and Pennsylvania Crookneck) are growing to their normal sizes, and your other gardening friends in other counties or states have the same issues too, you start to wonder about what you really received in that packet. Again, quality control?

I like the garden centers and the amount of products they carry. It is nice to go in and be able to see the planting trays before I buy them or look at the gardening tools to see what they feel like in my hands before I buy them. Also, I love their outdoor garden trellis (biggest and most varied selection around). Jung Dollars are great too!

So, for now, I buy cautiously from Jung Seed. I hope that this will change down the road, as I like supporting a seed company that is from WI and is family owned.

I got the feeling that if I wanted better quality, I should look elsewhere, which I can do. I've ordered from them for probably 30+ years at maybe $200 a year, referred friends and family. GMO's, may be why you are growing your own food, so you might be surprised to know Jungs is selling GMO corn seed. It doesn't say GMO, it says "synergistic", but lots of looking on the internet turns up that "synergistic" is a euphamism for genetically engineered AKA GMO. Thank my mother's keen skepticism. I thought, surly, as GMO sweet corn has only been legal a year, no one would be pushing it on home gardeners in 2013. Well, Mom's cynisism is rarely misplaced and careful research put me in my place. I don't even have the words, just glad she caught it before we paid to grow their poison.

On January 7th, 2013, redjeep added the following:

To answer the company's denial, I did a quick recheck. This is copied verbatim from an eHow article by Jennifer Hudock:

"Genetically altered sweet corn, also known as synergistic sweet corn, has been scientifically modified to contain a mixture of the different varieties of sweet corn kernels all on one cob. There are 10 varieties from Honey Select to Avalon."

Not saying the company is lying, but...kind of seems likely.

On August 12th, 2013, redjeep added the following:

University of Delaware Extension:

Synergistic sweet corn hybrids carry su-1, one or two copies of se, and one copy of sh2… A few synergistic varieties have the brittle-2 (bt2) gene instead of sh2. The bt2 gene’s effect on kernel sweetness is about the same as the effect of sh2 and both genes work in nearly the same way. Synergistic hybrids have the advantage of similar seed vigor to the normal and sugary enhanced hybrids.

So, a “synergistic” corn seed may be sh2 or brittle 2. What is brittle 2?
Patent Explaining Brittle-2 is GMO:
Patent application title: Brittle stalk 2 polynucleotides, polypeptides, and uses thereof
Inventors: Ada S. Ching (Wilmington, DE, US) J. Antoni Rafalski (Wilmington, DE, US)
IPC8 Class: AC12N1582FI
USPC Class: 800278

Class name: Multicellular living organisms and unmodified parts thereof and related processes method of introducing a polynucleotide molecule into or rearrangement of genetic material within a plant or plant part
Publication date: 2009-09-03
Patent application number: 20090222945
Abstract:
This invention relates to an isolated polynucleotide encoding a BRITTLE STALK 2 (BK2) polypeptide. The invention also relates to the construction of a chimeric gene encoding all or a portion of the BK2 polypeptide, in sense or antisense orientation, wherein expression of the chimeric gene results in production of altered levels of the BK2 polypeptide in a transformed host cell.

But brittle 2 is listed as BK2, and the Delaware article said Bt2?
So, Bt as listed by the University of Kentucky:
Bt-corn is a type of genetically modified organism, termed GMO. A GMO is a plant or animal that has been genetically modified through the addition of a small amount of genetic material from other organisms through molecular techniques. Currently, the GMOs on the market today have been given genetic traits to provide protection from pests, tolerance to pesticides, or improve its quality. Examples of GMO field crops include Bt-potatoes, Bt-corn, Bt-sweet corn, Roundup Ready soybeans, Roundup Ready Corn, and Liberty Link corn.

So, Bt or BK it is GMO, and if you purchase something listed as “synergistic” it could be hybrid, it could be GMO, seems a lot easier to just steer clear.
Unless Jung thinks the Universities are all lying or ignorant, or whatever their belittling my post was based on. I had an excellent year without them.
On Aug 12, 2013, Jung Seed responded with:

"On Jan 7, 2013 1:22 PM, Jung Seed responded with:

We do NOT sell any GMO seed. Synergistic corn is not genetically modifided. It is hybridized the same as su, sh2 or se hybrid sweet corn is done. I'm sure you did see some kind of information online. But you can also find the information that Jung Seed is owned by Monsanto and that is completely false also.

On Aug 16, 2013 9:44 AM, Jung Seed added:

I would like to apologize if you feel we were belittling your post. This is never our intent. With all the controversy on GMO's information can be very confusing and misleading. Jung Seed does not sell and GMO seed. We are also a very reputable company with over a 100 years of history, there would be no point for us to intentionally mislabel our products. In the notes from the Delaware Extension in regards to synergistic corn they state "Synergistic sweet corn hybrids carry su-1, one or two copies of se, and one copy of sh2... A few synergistic varieties have the brittle-2 (BT2) gene instead of sh2" If further states that Brittle-2 is GMO. If you look in our catalog or on our website you will see ALL of our synergistic corn is se/sh2 variety. None of our synergistic corn carries the BT2 gene. In the catalog we even have a header above the synergistic corn describing the corn and that ours have 75% se kernels and 25% sh2. Again no BT2 gene is present.
I hope this helps to clear things up, as you are right yes you can purchase GMO synergistic corn, just as you can purchase regular sweet corn that is GMO. But we DO NOT carry any GMO so you can not purchase GMO seed from Jungs regardless of the variety.
If you have any other questions at all please feel free to email me directly.

This negative response is based on the condition and size of live plants ordered and received from Jung Seed. On My 2nd I ordered 3 Hardy Rozanne Geranium, an Arizona Gaillardia offer (3, 1 of 3 varieties), a Jack Frost Brunnera, and 4 Solomon's Seals (roots).

The order came by USPS and took 11 days. Either they received rough handling or were not packaged well. Almost all the plants appeared like they were placed sideways into their small plastic planter so the tops were actually not on the open side but an enclosed side. 2 plants, the Jack Frost Brunnera and an Arizona Red Shades Gaillardia, died almost immediately. The 3 hardy Rozanne Geranium are tiny and I feel they should have been much bigger for the price paid. I have since ordered from some other companies and for the same price you receive a substantially larger plant.

I did also order a hosta special offer of 6 roots. All the plants that were roots came dried and have been successful.

I did contact Jung Seed and was told that I would get a credit. I have not seen the price charged back to my credit card so I guess I have a store credit.

For years we have received the Jung Seed catalog and when my father was alive we had purchased much seed that produced very fine plants.

I would tend to feel okay buying a dried root and seed from Jung Seed. However, seeing the huge difference in size and quality I have received from other companies when ordering live plants I doubt I will order live plants from Jung Seed.

More negative than positive, my experience with Jung this time around has been fairly disappointing. Admittedly, the "David" phlox I ordered is doing very well. But I also ordered a couple of climbing roses sold as a pair -- "New Dawn" and "Zephirine Drouhin". Even though my order was placed reasonably early, I was informed "New Dawn" had sold out. The other rose that arrived had very small, fragile canes and it performed pathetically, in spite of being located in an ideal spot and coddled all summer. The winter proved too much for it and no sign of life appeared by spring.

I asked for a replacement. I was informed I would receive a partial refund: "Our guarantee states we need to be notified by October 1st of the year purchased if any items have failed to grow. Even though it is past the guarantee we will share in the loss and send partial credit for that item."

The bottom line is that Jung's replacement policy is not at all accomodating for northern gardeners. Where I live, the ultimate test of a plant is whether it can survive that first winter. Since Jung's guarantee expires before the really cold weather sets in, it is very risky to order live plants from them.

Customer service is great, but the plants leave something to be desired. Won't order again. The customer service department is the only thing that kept this from being a negative review.

In January, I ordered strawberries, shallots, raspberries, pole bean seeds, and pumpkin seeds. At that time, I didn't know that I would be moving in March, but their customer service department was excellent about changing my shipping address and cancelling the raspberry order (my new home has terrible clay soil and I wanted to put everything in containers, so raspberries are not an option).

The strawberries looked very healthy when they came. I planted them in window boxes filled with high quality potting soil and kept them well watered. I even brought them into the garage when a late freeze hit, but they didn't do much of anything. They sent up a leaf or two each before they suddenly died.

I called customer service about it and they said that the most likely cause was a soil-borne virus. They offered to replace them, but I was nervous that the next bundle of plants would also succumb to whatever was in that soil, so I asked for credit towards something else.

With my credit, I ordered a maypop passionflower. It arrived three days ago. I opened the box to find that they had used the wrong packing material. Those plastic packets filled with air are not a good thing when a plant is being shipped from 900 feet in elevation to 6400. They expanded so much that the box was bulging and the plant was crushed. It was bad enough that the plastic pot was mangled. None of the stems survived the trip. I have no idea whether the plant will be able to come back from its roots.

I called customer service again. When I explained the situation, they were willing to replace it, much to my surprise. Now I'm just waiting on the new one and keeping my fingers crossed that they'll use a reasonable form of cushioning. I hope they'll take my suggestion of not using those darn air packets for delicate plants. If you live at high altitude, you should definitely give them special instructions for how to pack the plants.

At the time, I did not notice that the Hilda Romano seeds (2 packets of 2 oz each) were marked: "Packed for 2012 - Sell by Dec. 2012". So far (May 20, 2013) I had to throw away three batches, all started in Jiffy pellets. The seeds just turn brown and rot. Planted in exactly the same way, the GoldMarie Romano seeds grow very well. I have already transplanted some outside.

I called Jung Seed about half an hour ago (talked to Leah), explained what happened, and was told that my Visa card would be credited of the proper amount (that should be $7.45 for the seeds, plus prorated shipping costs; I do not expect Jung Seed will reimburse me for the wasted Jiffy pellets).

I do not want to be mean, so I will give them a "neutral" rating. But I really wonder whether I should order from them again next year. Johnny's seeds might be a safer bet.

After years of renting we finally got our first home and garden. I was overwhelmed with desire to plant just about everything that our family grew when I was a child and choices I had to make. Jung seed co. was my first online order of live products and I was nervous. Last year I have ordered couple of different Black currants for better berry production as catalog suggested, two Red Lake currants, and couple of Gooseberries when they were on sale late in season. One of the Gooseberries did not survived shipping and Black Currants happened to be of the same variety. I contacted Customer Service and was politely informed that since the season is over, credit for those two items will be issued for the next spring. This was not a problem as there are so many things to do in the garden! Spring came, and I have got my new mail order that was placed in winter: the Ben Sarek black currant, The Invicta and Pixwell gooseberries and horseradish crowns. Everything was packed excellent and came in perfect time for planting, and I was credited for last year items. I followed instructions in enclosed brochure on planting guidelines. The currants from last year are now thriving, despite the fact that this year I had to replant dormant Red currants since first location turned out to be waterlogged in the spring, and also I moved one of the Black Consort bushes, also dormant, to my new berry patch...and this year's order is already doing great, wish I could add pictures! I AM THRILLED with my experience with Jung. Great product, great selection, great customer service- what else can I wish for? Oh, more garden space, but Jung can't control that!

Now the negative; sadly I have had to put them on my NEVER ORDER list. I don’t know who is currently in charge of their mail order department these days but they know about as much about gardening as a common cranberry.

I sent them an order for several seed packets and two varieties of seed potatoes. As anyone who grows potatoes knows, they have to be in the ground early in spring in order to mature before the hot summer arrives. When I never heard from them, I send them a request for shipment date, which resulted in a form type email advising me “plant material for my area is shipped at the end of April/early May”. Insulting at the very least. I then sent them another email EXPLAINING what seed potatoes is not plant material and I needed them NOW. This got the 2nd “plant material” notice.

I sent them a final email demanding the seed potatoes be shipped without further delay and they arrived on April 10th -PERHAPS in time to grow.

I have been a customer of Jung for 20 years and they were never this bad. Something has happened over the past couple years that has ruined mail order.

I’d suggest they do a introspective review and start fixing the things that are broken. Perhaps starting with a new "cranberry" in charge.

As for me, I don't think I'll live long enough to risk another order.

This may have been my last year to order from this company. They've been very good in the past, but lately they've been pretty bad. I'm still having decent experiences with their seeds, but this year they came almost too late to plant. I ordered seeds from both Jung's and Park seeds on exactly the same day in late January - the Park order was here in a week and a half, but my Jung order didn't arrive for almost 2 months. I don't know whether to blame the postal service or Jung's. When it did arrive, the seed order was in good shape - their "free seeds" were missing (didn't matter much to me), but the rest of the seeds germinated well. But their perennials have been a mess lately. Years ago, they sent nice-sized bareroot plants and roses that all grew well. Last year, I got tiny perennials, with tiny root systems, in tiny pots - and most of them were damaged, some half out of their pots or torn to bits, due to poor packing. Their customer service department did replace them without question - with tiny plants that did, nevertheless, arrive in good shape and grow. Their bareroot perennials and shrubs last year were fine - except for one rose that arrived with almost no root system and progressively shriveled and blackened. Jung's also replaced this with another rose without question. (I was a little surprised to see that the replacement was probably twice the size of the first plant, though I'd ordered their top grade in the first place.)

This year, I ordered nothing that wasn't specified as bareroot in their catalog. The one shrub rose I ordered was a mess - shriveled and with dead leaf buds that had obviously sprouted then died - though after a few months it has put out new buds and is actually thriving. Another shrub was perfectly fine, though very small for the price I paid. And the two bareroot perennials never even sprouted or showed any signs of life.

Overall, they've stood behind their guarantee so far and replaced anything that arrived damaged or didn't grow. But it was much nicer in the past when their plants came in good shape in the first place. I'm not sure they're worth the aggravation anymor

On July 11th, 2003, AS added the following:

Sent them a polite e mail about the dead salvia on June 15 - it's been a month, and no response at all. Pity about them - many years ago, they used to be one of my favorite companies.

On July 14th, 2003, AS added the following:

I contacted them again (actually, just re-sent the first e-mail with the comment "I sent this a month ago and I haven't heard from you") and received a prompt and polite e-mail offering to replace the salvia this fall.
On March 10th, 2012, AS added the following:

I ordered seeds from them this spring, for the first time in many years. They came promptly this time, and so far the seed counts and germination have been mostly good. Though, like the previous poster, I received one packet of specialty peppers that didn't thrill me with the germination rate (and there were only a few seeds in the packet, so I was sparing).
On April 10th, 2012, AS added the following:

After receiving the rest of my order, I still rate this company a "neutral" overall.

The seeds were fine except that one packet of peppers (less than 40% germination on that one). And I liked it that they didn't try to keep my money as a "store credit" when they ran out of a seed packet. Instead, they issued a refund without my asking.

A bareroot shrub was surprisingly decent. Good roots, well packed and still moist on arrival. Came rather late for planting bareroot in my zone, though, and well after a previous poster in a colder zone of Illinois got their potted perennials.

On the other hand, a bareroot perennial I tried as a test order confirmed my previous impressions of their perennials - pricey and poor quality for the size. It was in a very small plastic bag labeled as containing a single root. Instead, there were two tiny little pieces of root that looked as if they had been broken off a larger plant. Even if it had been one root, it wouldn't have been impressive for the type of plant, and this was just a joke for the price. ($8?)
On April 11th, 2013, AS added the following:

I was pleasantly surprised by their fruit trees and small fruits. I crossed my fingers and ordered an heirloom apple tree from them last year (couldn't find that variety anywhere else), and it arrived in good shape. Definitely not the straightest tree I've ever gotten, but the size and branch structure were quite nice. Strawberries also arrived healthy and have started to grow well.

I've also ordered nursery stock (several fruit trees and fruit bearing bushes), most of them late season and heavily discounted, and all have arrived in excellent condition and grew well. I only had one currant bush that didn't make it, and Jung's replaced it promptly. I'm very impressed that I've had nearly 100% yield from mail order nursey stock. My expectation is closer to 50%. Therefore, I strongly endorse Jung for both mail order seeds and nursery.

I placed an online order for seeds and received them in about 10 days. This was very good. The problem: While placing my online order, I could not complete the order unless I typed in my telephone number. So in case Jungs had a problem with my order, I typed in my phone number so that they could call me. After I gave my phone number the order went through. Less than a day, I began to receive calls from telemarketing companies!!! I am getting calls all day especially during work hours. I have NEVER given my phone number out and have NEVER received telemarketing calls until after I ordered from Jungs. I Will NOT be ordering again.

My journey with Jungs.

Well, it started with my purchase from Totally Tomatoes - since they are connected and I've never received a Jung catalog before it has to be because I purchased with TT earlier this year. Mid-February Jung's wonderful catalog arrived - One could (and I did) get lost in. So many wonderful things they have to offer - things I didn't know I wanted or needed until I saw them.

Immediately I saw two kinds of seeds I wanted... One is for a full sun plant, and will (I think) go great around the rose bush I ordered - four silver plants surrounding purple, I think I'll like it anyway.
(I planted four of these seeds and two have germed the other two so far have not, but I have plenty of seeds to hopefully get two more going. These were a sale item - 200 seeds for cheap, so again if the other two I need don't germ I can just plant more seeds until I end up with two more plants.)

The other batch (is ten seeds a batch?) of seeds is for a shade loving plant, and I have plenty of garden beds that need shade loving or at least tolerating plants - some spaces get more sun than others, but generally not enough for a plant that likes full sun, though some get more sun than a full shade plant would like.
(I got almost twice as many seeds as I was expecting here. So, as long as half of these germ I won't complain. Alas, I only tried to start these a day ago, so I can't know how many (if any) of these will germ.)

The other seeds were another freebie, and I tried to start six, but so far only four of those have germed, but they are freebies so I'm just pleased that any germed. Though based on the picture from the catalog I do think I'll really like them.

Anyway, I got the seeds and freebies on March 4th, I'm very pleased with one of the freebies - it's a seed starter, and sometimes seeds are so small that it is hard to plant them by hand. So, YAY! And as I mentioned above I believe I got a few more seeds with one pack than I was expecting, which is good just in case they don't all germ. The rest of my order arrived on March 21st, which for my area is about a month early, but I'm actually glad because having them early means that I can go ahead and get them started. I'm only real concerned about the rose bushes arriving so early.

Then continuing to look at the catalog - I saw it! MY HOSTA! In 2007 I bought six Hosta plants (well, eight, but only six of this one kind) from a local nursery and planted them. That summer I decided next season I was going to redo "hosta corner." Well, to do that I would need at least four more hosta plants - I wanted a biggish blue one as the center piece (or in this case corner piece), which I knew I'd have to mail order because I couldn't find any blue ones big or small locally. Still no problem thinks I, at least until spring 2008 when I went back to my local nursery and found they didn't have my hosta, and since they simply labeled two of them plantain lilies and no name at all for the others I didn't even know the name of my hosta to begin to search online for more. Of course, that didn't stop me from trying - I spent much of 2008 searching.

Needless to say I did nothing to "hosta corner" in 2008 because I was bummed about not finding my hosta.

Of course, that isn't the only reason I decided to order from Jung, though it was the biggie, they also had several versions of biggish blue hostas. Of course, I admit that I'm a little leery of bare root plants, I've not always had the best luck with bare root. However, the blue hosta when I unpacked it had a large root system, and as near as I could tell it looks viable, but it also doesn't have any green/blue peaking out the top. The three multi-colored ones have very tiny root systems, but when I unpacked them all three of those did have a small shoot of green peaking out the top. So, despite the small roots I'm hopeful with these three as well.

I also have a gladiolus corner, or at least in 2007 I tried to make one... Not counting the two wild glads that are actually growing in another spot which is in full shade, which I thought glads didn't like, but those wild ones don't seem to care about the lack of sun. These wild ones also started before I even thought about actually planting glads.
(Side note: The wild glads have very pretty flowers, even more so than my store bought ones.)

Anyway, in 2007 I bought twelve mixed glads and six soft pink from my local Dollar Store - don't laugh the bulbs were big, plump, and healthy, and all but one came up that first year, and the one that ended up not blooming had started to grow before ants attacked it. And because the ants attacked so fast the plant was dead before I could get a plant safe ant killer, but my point is that all those Dollar Store bulbs were viable, and from what I can see most (maybe two are on the small side, but still A-okay) of the ones ordered from Jung are just as big and healthy as the ones from the Dollar Store. Alas, many from the Dollar Store never came back the second year, which is why I needed more "Glads," and thanks to Jung I have them and in colors that I couldn't have got locally.
(Obviously, it'll probably be little over a month before I know if all are going to sprout. I do hope they are honestly mixed like the ones from the DS were, but as long as they all sprout I probably won't complain.)

I also ordered two rose bushes, or at least one is a bush, and both are supposed to be big. I admit this may have been a mistake on my part, but I've always wanted a proper rose bush because they are so pretty. Still I haven't tried roses before now because they take a LOT of tlc, and most of the dirt around here is red clay. So I probably should have just accepted that my two mini (very mini) roses are the only ones I'd ever have. Anyway, the roots looked moist and healthy - the "carefree" was smaller, and one of the branches had broke in transit, but it still looks okay. So, if I can fight the red clay by adding good or at least better dirt to the spot hopefully both of these bushes will do well.

This was a rather large order for me, I usually do not make such a large purchase with a mail order company that I haven't used before. Generally, a first time purchase is somewhere between thirty/fifty dollars. I spent quite a bit more than that with Jung, and thankfully I do not regret it because Jung has come through for me.

Finally, I wish to thank another feedbacker, because without their feedback and Jungs response to said feedback I would have ran into an issue with getting the website to accept my address, but thanks to that exchange I knew exactly what to do to make the webite accept my address.

On July 9th, 2009, ConGar added the following:

I'm not changing my rating, though I thought about lowering it to "neutral," because the hostas I was so happy about finding all failed. They started well, but after danger of frost I moved them outside and all three of them died. The one I've dubbed "Big Blue" is doing well, though still small. However, I am a bit miffed about losing the other three hostas, first (and most important) they were not cheap, plus I really wanted them.

However, I decided in the end not to lower my rating because all the other stuff I ordered has done well to fairly well. So, I didn't think it would be fair to lower the rating because of one weird failure.

Anyway, wanted to note that the "glads" were indeed mixed as I'd hoped, and that both rose bushes have done well so far. Still don't know how they'll fair over the winter, but that was a worry even before I ordered them.

What is most interesting to me is the fact that I almost screwed up with the "glad" bulbs - some were more than a little molded by the time I planted them, but they're all coming up.

(The well to fairly well comes in to play because while most all the seeds germed many of them died when I tried to harden them off for placement outside. Not blaming Jung for this because I've found hardening off baby plants can sometimes be tricky.)
On December 29th, 2012, ConGar added the following:

Not changing my rating, but I wanted to update again. I can't speak to company products/service since 2009, because shortly after my last order with Jung I started having some physical problems that left me unable to garden as I wanted too.

Anyway, those two rose bushes I was worried about are still doing fine all these years later. One took off right away and I've had to re-stake it four times it just keeps growing. However, the other one was a bit slower, but that's my fault. As mentioned shortly after this I had some problems, but I planted one of the rose bushes in a tricky/weedy spot that at the time my plan was to clean up, but until this past season didn't get around to doing that. So the other bush stayed alive but just wasn't really growing. Finally this past spring I got someone to weed the space and to my shock that second one is now (after just one season) almost as big as the first one (not yet as full, but certainly as tall now). So I'm hopeful I'll be able to enjoy two beautiful rose bushes this coming season. Clearly I got good stock on my roses from Jung.

As for the glad bulbs they aren't okay, but again that is the fault of my physical problems, because one winter I just wasn't able to dig them up so most (but to my shock not all) died. But for two seasons they was perfect.

But the main reason I came back to update this was because I mentioned above that I was considering changing my rating because the failure of the hostas. What for some reason I didn't come back then to mention sooner was that shortly after making that comment I decided to see if Jung would replace the failed hostas (because I realized I was still within the replacement period) and they did. YAY! And while it's just a wee bit too early to see if they're coming back for the 2013 season the replacements have been doing fine up until now, and if they don't come back this season I'd probably have to blame the bad growing season that was last year rather than any fault of Jung.

In writing to Jung about something else, I mentioned that to Rachel. She said they would replace it if I wanted, or refund my money. I told her no, it was such a good plant, it had to be something I had done. Some way I had treated it.

But, she said it was under warranty and they would replace it. This is not the first good service I have received from Jung. I try to purchase from them both seeds and plants because I know they stand behind their products. Thanks Rachel. Jeanette

I have been ordering from this company for two years and I have always been lucky. Twice I ordered different seeds and they were not bad. Of course not all seeds germinated but it is normal - what would we do with all our plants if all of them germinated and grew like crazy? So I am happy with Jung's seeds and recommend to order them. I also ordered bulbs and peonies, and all of them were excellent - I enjoyed pretty tulips and hyacinths this spring, and the Jung's peony has such a big bud that it is sure to bloom this year (I ordered more peonies from van Bourgondien, they are growing, but none have flower buds). This spring I also ordered a few perennials - I was not impressed with the way they were packed - even nurseries that charge much less for their plants pack their stuff much better, - so I think that the staff of Jung must work more in this respect. Three plants didn't grow, I called and the customer service rep was very polite and eager to help - so I got three new healthy plants. I am happy with my collaboration with Jung and I will continue to order from them. THANK YOU!

Jung is a great company and I like to order from them, still they must work more at their packing and shipping. They sent me replacements, one of them was OK, but the other was broken again, and I didn't want to have any more replacements. Now I don't know if I should order this hydrangea from this company again next spring or look for it elsewhere, for I am not sure that I will get a healthy unbroken plant. I like this company and their plants, but their packing looks so terribly unprofessional that ruins the general image of the company and the labor of the workers in greenhouses and fields.
But their roses are excellent. Thank you.

When I called customer service, I had to carefully describe what had happened. Saying that my order was a "mess" wasn't an adequate description. This guy actually told me not to get "huffy" if I wanted help with my problem. I gritted my teeth and gave him the descriptions of the dead plants that he required.
Jung needs to teach their operators that customer service reps are there to help customers, not to exercise their rudeness. In the end, I ended up getting replacements or credit, which is what I wanted, but it was a rotten experience all around.
Jung shipped the order before I could plant outdoors [the plants are annuals] and I have the rest of my order under plant lights. When I asked why they don't ship at the beginning of the week so the plants don't sit around on the weekend, the rep laughed and said they would never get everything shipped on time. There was no answer for the too early delivery.

I received my order yesterday. The plants look fine as far as I can tell, but the service was terrible.

I ordered early in the spring to ensure that I could get what I wanted. I was never informed about when the order would be shipped. I did look, and their website did not provide the information. I'm sure I could have called, but should I have needed to? This is their core business, they presumably have these dates, or estimates of them determined well in advance.

They shipped my order on a Thursday. They were very impressed with the 4 day shipping speed when I was on the phone with them. I was disappointed that I received my order on a Monday. I, like most people, work during the week. Since I ordered months ago, they could have planned when they sent it so it would arrive shortly before the weekend when I'm likely to be available to plant them. They assured me that they have no way of knowing how long shipping will take. They clearly made no effort.

They shipped the order without planting instructions.

They put a note in specifying that it was a partial order, but since there was no packing list, I had to look up the original order to figure out what was in the box.

The woman I spoke to on the phone about these things was not only unhelpful and unapologetic, but incredulous that I would even bother her with this information.

I order many things on the internet, have ordered plants from other companies, and simply do not find this level of disinterest in serving customers. This was my first and last order with Jung Seed Co.
