I kept them well watered the first couple years, and they have been amazingly resilient to what most people tell me are less-than-ideal growing conditions. This is their third year in this location and they are currently covered in blooms and seem very healthy even after this past very harsh winter.
Edited to add: My original comment was from 2010. Eight years on, 1 has died, and I've just moved one other one to a more appropriate (moister and shadier) place. Though 2 of the 4 are still doing fairly well in their original location after 8 years, I can say there are much better choices for shrubs in a very sunny location. Still, it has been an interesting experiment--these are tough plants!
