I have seen this plant come up along the grape vines some other years as well. I could not be more happy to see these flowers when a lot of things are looking fairly dismal because of the drought. We live on a terrain that is called a glade, i.e. extremely rocky, but of course, the soil around the grapevines was improved to some extent by adding some cheap store bought soil and mulch. We beg the power company for all their wood trimmings they can give us and in about 2 years this becomes fairly nice to add to needed areas. I might try to save some seeds and see whether I can grow it elsewhere.

If you're planting plants, they do take a bit of irrigation to get established -- and that's tricky, as too much kills them but so does too little. Las Pilitas Nursery states in their native habitat the plants live on sunny hillsides for about 20 years. They're tough -- and lovely.

So I moved the remaining one to a north facing bed that receives some midday shade. It is still living, but the bottom half is brown. It did manage to bloom and the blooms were quite beautiful if you could ignore the foliage. I just don't think this plant was quite ready for Texas's type of hot.

They seem to have died during our recent hard winter. I miss them and might have to plant more. It is worth it to grow them as an annual even if they are not fully hardy.
