Early in the spring, as soon as the snows had melted, we went out and uncovered the top 1/2 to 1/3 of the iris rhizome. It has rewarded our efforts with many more blooms this year. It was my understanding that the iris needs to have its 'feet' uncovered and chilled by the early spring temperatures in order to bloom better.
Our Iris bloom shows a bit of a pinkish/mauve color on the fall of the flower. It stands approximately 17" from ground to leaf (spear) tip, with the flower stalk being an additional 14" above the spears.
In the late fall, as we are putting all of the gardens to bed for the winter, we will cut the iris back to about 3" above the soil line, and give each plant a light covering of mulch.
