Very easy to grow.
Deep rooted.
A heavy feeder. (I grow organic. Winter Vetch, Red Clover, and Cereal Rye cover crops Fall...Read More through Winter. Turn over the green manure early Spring. Alfalfa Compost Tea every 2 to 3 weeks throughout the growing season works wonders as does fish emulsion.)
Best planted in raised bed berms. As with all Toms, keep your soil deep, loose, and "fluffy". (And again, make sure it`s fertile.)
Seeds were first purchased (online) from Johnny`s Selected Seeds in Maine. (Both last and this years`s crops are from my own seeds.)
Plants are full and bushy, averaging 4 1/2 to 5 feet in height.
No disease issues whatsoever. (I live in high mountain Utah.)
Moderate to good production (15 to 25 per plant) of 6 to 9 ounce (on average) deep orange fruits - though 2 plants out produced all with 35+ total.
Very good late season (2 weeks post average first frost) production.
Nicely balanced sweet to acid flavor with sweet cherry overtones.
"Old time tomato" taste is an accurate description.
Juicy, yet firm texture. Few seeds. Thin skin. An easy slicer.
In my opinion, Valencia is a wonderful salad and sandwich Tom.
It looks - and tastes - great on a garden fresh plate of carrots, radishes, cukes, and peppers. (It`s also that rare Heirloom Tom that doesn`t fight, flavor wise, with my own home made Sweet Honey Vinegar.)
Not a "my top 5 favorite" Heirloom Tom, but a good one nevertheless. (One of the better "complimentary" Toms around.)
Naysayers aside, well worth the effort and said to be somewhat endangered.

In a cold season (2010) here, this plant was a good producer, but fruits were on the mealy side with little flavor. Will not plant again.
