False cucumber (Marah gilensis) is a vining plant related to edible cucumbers and squash that appears primarily in wet years from a large perennial tuberous root. The bitter, non-edible fruits are slightly prickly and about 1.5 inches long.
The fruits look vicious, but the prickles are pretty soft and harmless. Even when dry they aren't that tough. I like seeing the vines clambering through the bushes, in this case a catclaw acacia. They add a touch of exotic viney green to the desert for the few months they are active.
