When purchasing new bamboo, you want (yes, want) rootbound plants. They will take off much better when transplanted, as they have more energy from the established roots.
We'll see how things go and provide updates.
Update: It is now June 8, 2011. The Albostriata has spread nicely, even though it did not receive much watering. A good bed of sawdust mulch helped to keep it moist and content. The spread has grown from a small patch to the right and left about six feet. Lovely, and SO easy to keep in check.
