It often has zigzag branches with small leaves up to 3/4 inch long. They are oblong to elliptic, usually untoothed and gradually taper to the base. The leaf tips are typically rounded; however, sometimes they have pointed, tip. The small white blooms appear in March when the plant leafs out and are in groups of one to four. The spherical, 1/2 inch long fruit has some flesh, but is mostly pit. The fruit ripens in June. This plant makes a nice ground cover especially in rocky areas that needs erosion control.
