I love ...Read MoreEvergreen Azaleas as florist plants, but not as landscape plants. Use them in the house for 2 weeks and throw them out. They are cheap plants sold at any discount center. Their cold hardiness is normally no more than USDA Zone 6a, a few like 'Karen' can make Zone 5b. They get attacked by the Azalea Lacebug, especially in sun, and their foliage often browns in the winter, especially in sun. They are best in part shade, sheltered from winds, and in moist acid soil.
The Evergreen Azaleas come from East Asia and all have tiny evergreen leaves and slender stems and grow at least somewhat bushy. The true Azaleas are neater, more upright, have stout stems, bigger buds, deciduous leaves that turn yellow or orange in fall, even red, and are high quality, more expensive plants.
