I have also grown it outside in my USDA zone 4 garden, but it is rather low growing, so you have to bend low to appreciate its fragrance. Better grown indoors!

Like many antique tulips, it's on the short side and holds its petals more loosely than formal, but it's well proportioned and fragrant and looks wonderful with the blues, purples, and yellows of its season. I lost track of a couple during construction and was so happy to find them coming up in our new gravel parking area. Apparently, although they would have objected if we'd started watering them in summer, they didn't mind having cars parked on them so much.

Easy to force bulb with a wonderful fragrance.
Single early tulip 'General de Wet' is a mutant from single early tulip 'Prince of Austria' (aka 'Prins van Oostenrijk'). Scented!
Introduced 1904.
This tulip has proven to be perennial in the ground AND in planters in my Zone 7 garden.
