We planted six on a berm in spring just before the drought of 2007. That summer we couldn't water them for fear that our wells would run dry. But we didn't lose one! The best part about it is the relatively small, tidy growth habit. Three years later our plants are right at 4.5' tall and seem to be content to stop right there.

it's a good foundation plant and as low hedges. shape after bloom to keep it's architectural beauty. when the leaves emerge they are bright ruby-red and darken to a deep maroon in the fall. the flowers are a fuchsia-pink they prefer moist acidic well-drained soil in sun to part-shade but otherwise unpicky.

it's 'biggest' bloom time is spring but flowers sporadically the rest of the season. trimming and dead heading may extend blooming period.

Plant in neutral to slightly acidic soil and irrigate once in a while
