Ernest now blooms beautifully every year! The last couple of years I tried pruning as a group 3 which works very well. This year I am experimenting with pruning as a group 2. We'll see what happens! May 2014

Love this clematis! Mine is a vivid, intense magenta & the blooms are huge, 5 - 6". Growing to almost 15 feet here (Syracuse, NY, zone 5...Read More) it likes a bit of a raised bed for good drainage, but needs routine watering. Never had any wilt problems & I've had it about 9 - 10 years now. Blooms profusely starting in mid to late June in my area & continues thru August. Then, when I think my garden is almost at an end for the season , Ernest Markham will gives me a last hurrah of the summer in September. Blooms aren't quite as big, but it is still very showy. No pest problems or diseases noted.
