It does bear some good coppery-brown smooth bark with warty lenticels and it gets good yellow fall color. It has shallow, fibrous roots, but it is still hard to transplant. It often grows in bogs and swamps with Tamarack, Black Spruce, Arborvitae, Black Ash, and other wetland plants. The arboretum specimen is doing well in neutral pH silty upland soil.
