This is a palm that has been grown for over 20 years in California, originally collected by Mardy Darian, and given this moniker ('Big Cu...Read Morerly')... but still no true classification. As it ages, it is starting to look familiar to some Madagascan palm experts, and could end up being Dypsis tokorovina... but until it finally flowers and a taxonomist works it up, we won't know... but I add it anyway since it is such a popular and 'Holy Grail' type of palm (very pricey).. only a few people have them in California, and so far only one is even starting to trunk that I know of. They just look like 2-3 huge leaves erupting straight out of the ground up to 10' tall... vey curly, plumose leaflets (hence the name). The palms in photos at the top of the page are from Marcus's nursery in Hawaii, where this palm grows faster (VERY slow here in California) and we can finally get an idea of what it will look like.. BIG palm!
