Cuyamaca Cypress (Cupressis arizonica stephensonii) has its native habitat in about one square mile within the King Creek Research Natura...Read Morel Area in the Cleveland National Forest in San Diego county. Some of the trees are found in the adjacent Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. The fires in the fall of 2003 nearly wiped the species out, but a few trees that were only singed have dropped seeds which had sprouted when I surveyed the area on 7 April 2004. This tree is now threatened with extinction and is highly protected. Fortunately there are numerous outplantings in various parts of San Diego county outside of Cleveland NF from which seeds can be obtained.
The color of the trees ranges from dull green to a distinct blue-green tint, probably due to soil differences. Not to be confused with Tecate Cypress which is fairly common in several S. Cal. areas. WTH.
