Streptocalyx is the only genus of Bromeliaceae with scented flowers, and what scent! Specially at nights, when the flowers open to atract moths.
This is a large plant, with long, leathery and spiny leaves that form a large rosette, where water is stored. A large inflorescence, reaching up to 6 ft. tall, comes from the middle, bearing hundreds of flowers, and a number of spines and spiny greenish bracts.
The flowers have spines on their green sepals, so be careful when handling it. The petals are white, and exhalate a strong sweet scent. They open at night, but stay on the plant for the next day. Blooms between late winter and mid summer.
This plant often grows as an epiphyte, so put it on a tree that will provide constant shade. Also, should be protected from wind. It likes regular watering (keep the tank always full of water) and high temperatures. Great for shaded greenhouses.
