Perhaps I can help as I know a lot about growing roses but really nothing about making cuttings to create an own-root rose. Yes the flower balls are quite heavy and tend to fall but in direct sunlight, the fragrance from these is truly incredible. I have grown a number of very fragrant own-root rose hybrid-teas over decades and I would rate this #1 or 2 for fragrance. They are not your classic rose form so that is why growers do not carry them anymore. They are susceptible moderately to black spot and susceptible to botrytis blight ( but what rose isn't?) . I have fought that back across my roses with some commercial nursery chemicals.
Auguste Renoir was a beautiful and fragrant rose on a bush hardy in zone 5 (microclimate more like zone 6). The distracting feature of A...Read Moreuguste Renoir was it's tendency to "ball". The flowers were so heavy and full in bud, then brown and falling off. I disliked this characteristic so much that I dug up and discarded the bush. Now I regret doing that and would very much like to replace it. Trouble is, I can't find a source for an own-root Auguste Renoir at any of the rose growers I usually visit on the web. Does anyone know where I can locate one from a mail-order nursery of good reputation?

Resistant to blackspot. Can be grown organically. A bloom factory throughout summer.
Blooms are packed with petals, 50+ according to the information out there, and it seems to be true. More petals than on any other rose I have seen.
