Polyantha Rose 'Perle d'Or'

Smaller sprays occur during the heat of summer The fall display is nice and it will bloom in a warm winter. Sends up almost totally leafless, branching flushes of buds above the bush that begin as salmon colored miniature tea buds and mature into light golden yellow pompoms. Do not trim this rose if at all possible. The new sprays come off of old wood and pruning is to be avoided for best floral display. Grows quickly. Mine is 4 feet tall x 3 feet wide and is only 3 years old. I have a feeling that this rose can grow into a rather large plant. Designated an "Earth-Kind" rose by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service of the Texas A&M University System. Usually spelled Perle d'Or. Blossoms come on sprays that project up to a foot above the bush. Each spray can contain over 100 buds. The blossoms are so close together that parts of a spray a spray can look like one very large flower. The display is magnificent! Do not remove the sprays after blooming. Within a few weeks new growth will occur along the sprays and provide you with smaller sprays that are surrounded by leaves. By the end of summer the spring sprays will have become the new top of your bush. This is a magnificent rose if you DO NOT TRIM it or prune it. If necessary you can trim some of the side foliage so that it will stay within confines but leave the top alone. Bush & flower shape and development are very similar to polyanthus rose Cecile Brunner but the sprays on Cecile Brunner are much looser with the flowers standing out individually. The Perle d'Or is a "must have" for the rose gardener.

Bred in France by Dubreuil and introduced by Rambaux in 1884, Perle d'Or is sometimes called "Yellow Cecile Brunner" or "The Buttonhole Rose". Parentage is polyantha x 'Mme. Falcot'.
