Birds like the berries which appear in the late summer early fall as the salmon return to the rivers. The berries progress from yellowish to a pinkish red (salmon) color when ripe. The flavor is rather bland.
I have a wild collected plant taken prior to the clearing of the area for a development. It is against the north side of a 6 foot fence, and shaded to the west by a cherry tree. It does well in this area, maybe not to its fullest, but certainly not lacking in vitality. It is currently about 4' wide by 5' tall. It does not have any invasive characteristics, provides food, and a light green along the fence line.
