Like many variegates this is slower growing than the species. It does take a little while to get established. It is not for the impatient or careless gardener. The rewards are worth the effort, as it has very nice variegation and looks great growing up a brick wall. It does tend to revert fairly regularly, but simply pruning out those shoots once or twice a year will keep it looking nice. It also doesn't root as easily from stems growing across the soil like the species, but it will once it is fully established.
I haven't confirmed this but I have been told that most of these that are available in nurseries are from cell culture. Not that it matters much, but there doesn't seem to be much of a call for it since the average person doesn't care to put much effort into things anymore, they just want to throw something in the ground and expect it to be beautiful in 2 months without any work. If you like variegates, can find it, and are a sensible gardener this is well worth it.
I really think that this is a beautiful vine. I planted this last year and was told that it was a fast and vigorous growing vine. How...Read Moreever, mine has not grown more than an inch in months. The plant looks really healthy, but it just never grows. Hate to just pull it up. I have fertilized it twice. Don't know what else to do.
UPDATE
It has been another year, and this vine has not grown another single inch. It is NOT fast growing at all! I wasted a lot of money on this plant. I will not pull it up, but I will never buy it again.
Update II
Another 4 to five months and the vine has not grown a single inch. Paid a good amount of money for a vine that was supposed to grow like crazy on my fence. Don't buy this plant. Get a Butterfly Vine or a Mexican Flame Vine. They grow extremely fast.
Thought that I was finished with this plant. Froze down to the ground. Came back up and grew 2 inches, and there it sits. Have tried fertilizer, but still just sits there. Don't buy this. Bought hoping that it would be quite invasive and shield the yard in back of me. Not invasive at all. Wonder if it would do better in a pot.
Love this plant growing in central Minnesota, zone 3. My husband dug a shallow hole to plant 4 of these vines before we left our lake ho...Read Moreme for the winter. Without any covering to protect these vines and being poorly planted, I was amazed when we returned the next summer that one of the vines had survived. It seems to like it's sunny and dry location and sandy loam soil. After 2 years now, it is about 3-4 feet tall. I need some advise on propagating this plant, as it is so hardy here in zone 3.
I really hate to rate this plant as neutral, and ONLY do so because it grows so darn fast that it has to be considered invasive. Other t...Read Morehan that I LOVE IT! We began w/ this plant from a cutting in the 70's, from my parents acreage in Oklahoma, where it grew wild. We have brought some w/ us w/ each move, and still have it! It is disease free for us, and we consider it a graceful and lush vine. It covers a north brick wall and a south brick wall at our current home that otherwise would be bare. We do attend it regularly to avoid any damage, should it reach the wooden or shingles parts of the house. I also have it as a groundcover w/ my hostas, trimming or pulling it out before it covers the hostas. It's beautiful, if well kept. The fall colors are gorgeous, too.
