The gray & fibrous bark shreds in long strips.
The red-brown cones are 3/4 inches in diameter, 1 to 2 seeded and covered with a gray waxy substance and take two years to mature.
The Yellow-green & scalelike leaves are 1/16th inch long.
It occurs in nature on plains, plateus, dry hills and mountains in pinyon-juniper woodlands in the range of 3000 to 7500 ft. elevation.
One can differentiate this species from the One-Seed Juniper (Juniperus monosperma) by having larger seeds, a well defined trunk and a broad rounded crown.
Both the male and female flowers occur on the same tree. Mistletoe is common in this species. The wood is used for firewood, posts & hogans and the cones are eaten by wildlife and used by the Native Americans as beads and medicine.
You can find this tree around the Lake Ashurst area amongst other places.
It is native to AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, UT & WY in the USA.
