Many a time when I am weeding around it, my clothed gloved hand will get a sharp leaf stuck in it. Otherwise, the plant has been doing alright in the slightly acid, silt-clay loam soil and location in front of the house in Zone 6b. It is not completely full of foliage.

This is less hardy than our native Ilex opaca. Dirr gives its useful range in eastern N. America as Z6b to Z7b. Good south into Z10 on the west coast, where summers are cooler.
Seed-grown trees are very spiny when young, growing less spiny with maturity.
The fruits cause vomiting but are not seriously poisonous.
