When it flowers it is beautiful, and in the winter it will stay out. It turns a most beautiful purple and hunter green color. It spreads and is kind enough not to choke out anything. My experience is it grows in the worst soil and the best soil. It will tolerate drying out between watering, but when the sun gets in the 100s it needs to be watered every day for a sunny spot like almost everything else in my area-expecialy when not thick (new area). It also tolerates being walked on well, so I use it as filler for stairways. It can be stuck in rocks and grow sideways. This is an amazing plant!!! I do not know what I would do without it. It even blocks out grass totally once thick and out here that is almost impossible.

Loves constantly moist but well drained, poorish soil in light to full shade. It will tolerate some sun but too much will burn the leaves.
Will get lost in deep shade as the leaves are so dark, an alternative would be to interplant some other leaf forms of Ajuga reptans for more interest. Best grown in light shade where the colour really shows up.
