Tricyrtis, Toad Lily 'Tojen'

Very nice Tricyrtis. Vigorous grower with larger leaves than most of the other Tricyrtis we have in our gardens and love the flowers.

The leaves tend to get 'rusty spots' on them by fall, but it doesn't seem to hinder the plant's vigor, so I haven't bothered with diagnosis or treatment.

Got eaten to the ground by slugs this spring and has not set out more leaves.

It has a more lax habit that T. hirta which means the plant is slighlty shorter, although the...Read More stems are at least as long. It usually has unspotted leaves and clear lavender or lavender blushed flowers.

While all the books say this is a shade plant, it has grown in full sun here for 3 years. The only difference is the plants don't seem to reach full height in sun.

Give this plant some space as it will multiply where happy and a large clump always looks much better than a few single plants.

In regions where winter is very cold, give them a warmer spot and winter mulch if there is no snow cover.

Slugs and snails can damage young growth but it usually recovers quite quickly. Vine weevils can also be a problem in Spring.

We grow them in pots to keep a close eye on the pests and makes them easier to divide before growth starts in late spring.
