Excellent variety, originally carried over the Oregon Trail by settlers going to Washington State. Grace Seminary Prof. Dr. Don Fowler, w...Read Morehile on a tour of the West Coast, ca 1981, received a sample of this seed, then passing some on to Seed Saver Exchange member George McLaughlin Jr (presently NJ/MC-G). This variety shows great insect resistance, for a bean. When grown near other varieties of bean, it has been noted by many, that bean beatles and other pests generally go to the other varieties, leaving this one alone! Fowler also has the unique characteristic of being a true bush variety that doesn't stop flowering until killed by frost. It's possible to be harvesting dry seed, from this one, at the same time as it's flowering and producing fresh green beans. Very productive. Compact bush habit. 5" slender green, round pods. Seed is dark, "coffee brown" and small.
It's also grown by a number of Seed Savers Exchange members. I have personally, grown this variety, with success, in IN, NJ and in the Bajío of central Mexico (acidic through white alkali conditions). When dry the seeds are a bit difficult to thresh. One can plant a five foot row of this bean and harvest OODLES of seed. Then, once you have enough seed for next year, you can actually start picking snaps for eating!
