Tall Bearded Iris 'Dauntless'

Got these in a trade and they bloomed the very first year. I am thrilled as few bearded iris have done well in my garden.

It has purple based foliage (pbf)) and very lovely white veining on the falls near the beard which distinguishes it from several other historic burgundy reds. It glows transcluscent at sunset, and needs to be in a clump, and planted with some light pinks and lavender purples, to truely be appreciated.
Dauntless was created by Clarence Phillips Connell of Nashville, Tennessee. He was Supervisor of Parks in Eastern Tennessee and Nashville, and Later became Superintendant of Vanderbuilt University Hospital, also in Nashville. He worked on some joint projects with Dr. James H. Kirkland also of Nashville,Tennessee, who created Dykes medal winner 'Copper Lustre', and 'Junaluska', and Clint McDade a Daylily Hybridizer from Chattanooga. Connell also worked on some iris with T. A. Williams,of Brentwood, TN, who is the Grandfather of the owners of still operating Iris City Gardens,and his friend Wentworth Caldwell, the creator of one the very first true blue tall bearded Irises 'Tishomingo' 1941; T.A. Washington and Mrs. Elizabeth Stahlman Joint creators of the Important Iris and 1936 Dykes Medal winner 'Mary Geddes' also of Nashville, and collaborated with famous Arkansas Hybridizer Walter Vestal and Sons, of Little Rock. Connell created more than 325 daylilies, experimenting with many dark reds and blacks, and created some of the very best spiders and unusual forms of his time, still holding up today against many modern daylilies.

My neighbor brought me a ton of these last year from a lot he was clearing off. Blooms stood at least three feet, huge clumps growing w/...Read More no care in dry sand, covered in leafy mulch, and gorgeous. I trimmed and planted them right away, and this year they have bloomed like crazy. Wonderfully fragrant, lovely cut flowers for the house.
