This is a US federally listed noxious weed. Its interstate transportation is illegal without a permit from APHIS. Twelve states have also banned its sale, transport, and planting.
According to BONAP, this species has naturalized in 12 states, mostly in the southeast.

It has no redeeming qualities and is extremely flammable. Paraphrasing a local news article, 'It's easily identifiable this time of year while it is flowering. The blades can be as tall as six feet, crested with a cylindrical white seed head two-to-eight inches in length. Clemson University researcher says all forms of Imperata cylindrical, including the red forms, such as Japanese Bloodgrass and Red Baron, are illegal (but being sold) in SC. If found, contact your local Extension office or The Dept of Plant Industry at 864-646-2130."

I have seen this grass referred to as the seventh worst weed in the world. I have seen notes from nurseries selling the thing that instruct the buyer to destroy it if it reverts to the green form. I question whether anyone should be selling this grass.
