Little water in the cold wet months will keep it alive. It can go without water for several months, like 6 at a time. The flower will look like a round bunch of white flowers (like a toilet brush)on a stalk which is the size of a broom handle, the flowers open only a few at a time starting at sun down, the head will flower, only once, then never again. It will have a heavey rootstock under the soil line, I don't believe S.kirkii v. pulchra one has a sweet perfume like some of the other species.
