A real thug of a plant, Ficus elastica 'Schrijveriana' graced my Torquay garden for a number of years. Originally bought from Bob's Garde...Read Moren Supplies in Totnes back in 1978 it grew happily in my lounge until it reached the ceiling in the mid 1980's. Upon moving to Torquay I planted it straight out into the garden and forgot about it, then several years later I had an enormous tree on my hands! I had to get a local tree surgeon in to remove it (Simon Harris in Brixham) as it was started to move the foundations of my bungalow and the invasive root system had cracked Dorothy, next door but one's, sewage pipe and caused the toilets in my whole street to back up (I wasn't popular as you can imagine). If you live in a semi-tropical climate and have a large garden and want a fast growing tree this is for you, if not beware! I now grow a Ficus benjamina, but keep it hard pruned back every year to keep it in check.
