It is one of the only few iris that is both recognized as a IB iris [Intermediate Bearded Iris] and an Species iris. It was first collected by Anton Joseph Kerner in Italy and then correctly described and registered for him by Otto Stapf in 1887, later in 1918 it was added to the list of recognized IB iris by Farr and then officially in the 1939 iris checklist. It gets 26 inches tall and is not only an Early bloomer, but one of the few bearded iris that actually thrives in, and seems to enjoy, partial shade, and thus does great in rock gardens and alpine environments, where it is often seen in decent sized patches and clumps in the late Spring. It is quite similar and often grown along with, Crimson King, which has a more reddish tinge to its purple color than Kochii, I.germanica, Dorothea, and especially Eleanor Roosevelt which it looks about 90% identical too, and can be mistaken for easily. Also known as 'Atroviolacea' it is slightly darker than '' 'Atropurpureae' Purple King' '' http://wiki.irises.org/bin/view/Spec/SpecKochii http://wiki.irises.org/bin/view/Ib/IbKochii
