It can be found in a wide variety of conditions, from arid cliffs in the Central Valley, to the cool, moist coastal bluffs of the Pacific Northwest. In warm climates it does best when grown in shade, but in cooler coastal climates it can also be found growing in full sun. While generally evergreen, it will sometimes die back to the ground in extreme drought or heat, but it will re-appear when the rainy season returns. Flowers range in color from white to red, with white and pink being most common.
