The seeds are very tiny. The seedlings go from green to a purple bronze under sun. Even before the bright red feathery blooms appear, its beautiful foliage is enough candy for the eye!
Even with no fertilizer they look healthy and beautiful. One year I used Miracle Gro all purpose fertilizer and they turned out having lush foliage with few blooms. The next year I tried a bloom booster and they gave me head turning display of abundant flowers. Planted en masse they look like bright red flames. Very easy care, no deadheading needed. No diseases or pests. Flowers last from beginning to end.
I gave some plants to a friend who planted them in ground. He can’t stop raving about them. I don’t know what fertilizer he used but they grew up to 3 feet tall. He spaced them narrowly so the flowers grew elongated. His lasted through the end of October, while mine lasted the beginning of September. We’re in zone 7b. Even though they’re annuals, the next year we had volunteers showed up.
