To maximize the amount of variegation, most people stool their plants regularly, cutting them nearly to the ground in early spring before growth starts. This also controls size---without it, this plant can turn into a monster shrub/small semi-weeping tree to 20'. Stooling it can hold it to 4-6'. It can also be pollarded. Feed it with compost yearly to help it produce more new growth.
This species enjoys wet soils, but it tolerates regular well-drained soil better than most willows. It tolerates half-day sun.
