Easter Island is an example of one of the most complete destructions of a natural habitat. Toromiro is one of the last survivng native plant species and the last surviving endemic tree. Although it is extinct in the wild, several trees exist in private collections in Chile, Australia, The US, and Europe. Efforts are now underway to find genetically diverse stock in order to reintroduce the tree to its native home, Easter Island.
