Usually, the bracts which are yellow green; however, the color can vary through to rusty pink. The central flower core has white plumes with black tips. Long leaf sugarbush flowers intermittently from autumn to the following spring. It is not well suited to very dry areas, regions with very severe frost nor areas tat have hot humid conditions. Long leaf sugarbush prefers well-drained, slightly acid soil.
